The psychological characteristics related to persistent problem drinking among college students: a qualitative research based on the grounded theory

Abstract

The present study focused on the psychological characteristics of college students who had persistent drinking problems through a qualitative method. We recruited nine participants who had a problem drinking history and divided them into two groups: persistent versus developmentally limited problem drinking group according to their current drinking status. Through intensive interviews, we attempted to delineate and clearly understand the variables involved in changes and the continuation process of problem drinking. As a result of qualitative analyses based on grounded theory, difficulties in self-expression were found in the persistent problem drinking group. This group showed a tendency to attempt more honest conversation level by consuming alcohol and experienced release of negative emotions: participants from this group also drank when trying to cope with negative emotions such as shyness and anxiety. Although drinking patterns were greatly influenced by friends, we found that participants were not passively influenced by them but actively choose friends who have similar drinking patterns to theirs. Finally, both groups equally experienced alcohol-related negative consequences; however, the persistent problem drinking group evaluated these consequences as positive.
