Abstract

The interest in the use of shield TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) on the tunnel excavation has been increased rapidly in Korea. The shield TBM tunnel is generally designed as non-drainage tunnel. Consequently, if water leakage through the segment joints happens, big problems on the usage and stability of tunnel can be occurred. In this study, the variation of waterproof capacity of hydrophilic waterstop by the construction error and excessive displacement of segment was studied firstly. Secondly, the decrease of durability of hydrophilic waterstop by the sulphate and chloride contained in the groundwater and seawater was investigated. The results showed that if the angle discordance at the segment joints is beyond the 2 degree, the proper waterproof capacity of hydrophilic waterstop can not be guaranteed. In addition, if the hydrophilic rubber waterstop is exposed to the sulphate for a while, the proper durability of hydrophilic waterstop can not be expected.

Abstract

In this study, TBM selection methods to meet soil and site conditions were presented. Factors and excavation equipment affecting TBM selection by soil and environmental condition were selected and classified. Weights between equipment and influencing factors selected were calculated by applying the AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) method. The results of the analysis influence factors, Ground condition was a major factor in objective factors and strength was a major factor in the hard condition of criteria factors and water pressure was a major factor in the soft ground condition of criteria factors. In Environment condition, existence of adjacent structures was evaluated more important than existence of feasible site. Lastly, Adequacy was verified through the deduction of results that coincide with input equipment by applying derived weights to actual site conditions.

Abstract

The objective of this study is the application of the harmony search (HS) algorithm and verification of the accuracy of inverse analysis to predict the location, thickness and electrical properties of anomalous zone ahead of tunnel face when utilizing the electrical resistivity survey using electrical resistivity of the ground. The relationship correlating the characteristic values of the anomalous zone with the electrical resistance values was derived using Gauss’ laws and Ohm’s laws. Inverse analysis program was developed to predict anomalous zone by using electrical resistivity based on HS algorithm. Electrical resistance measuring system is devised to obtain the electrical resistivity of the ground, and laboratory tests were performed on anomalies to verify the proposed HS algorithm. The test results show that the characteristics of the anomalies are predicted reasonably well resulting in less than 5% error when predicting the location and thickness of the anomaly.

Abstract

An earth pressure balanced shield TBM with the diameter of 4.4 m was designed and manufactured for a subsea discharge tunnel excavation. Its cutterhead was designed to be optimized for the strongest rock mass condition in the tunnel alignment, and then the applicability of the refurbished shield TBM was validated for its maximum capacity. Especially, the maximum cutter penetration depth for the strongest rock mass condition should be kept to be below 7 mm/rev in order to satisfy the allowable capacities of the shield TBM. From the analysis of TBM advance data, approximately 95% of field data showed the cutter penetration depth below 7 mm/rev. In addition, it was certified that the acting forces of every disc cutter, TBM thrust and torque during TBM driving were within the allowable capacities of the shield TBM and its disc cutters. When real acting forces of the disc cutters in the field were compared with those predicted by the CSM model, they showed the close relationships with each other even though the predictions by the CSM model were approximately 22∼25% higher than field data.

Abstract

In the design of tunnel segment structure, axial and moment forces are considered as significant forces. Since axial force is much greater than moment force, the whole section of segment remains in compression. Therefore crack width can be reduced. But the axial force is not considered in criteria for serviceability check. This fact leads service condition more severe compared to ultimate condition and makes the required steel reinforcement increase to meet the serviceability criteria. In this study, the effect of axial force on serviceability of tunnel segment is evaluated, experimentally and analytically. Mock-up tests on segments with actual size were performed and investigated in terms of initial crack resistance. The evaluation proves that more comprehensive design could be achieved when the axial force is considered in the procedure for the serviceability check in design of tunnel segment.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate cutter acting forces as well as axial stresses and torques in the shaft of two kinds of disc cutters including a single disc cutter and a double disc cutter with the same cutter ring geometry in a series of linear cutting tests. From the tests, the mean values of normal forces and rolling forces acting on the double disc cutter were approximately twice as high as those from the single disc cutter. Similarly, the mean values of axial stresses in the shaft of the double disc cutter were also twice as high as those from the single disc cutter even though the comparisons of torques from two kinds of disc cutters were insignificant since they showed very low values. However, it is necessary to take the durability of a tapered roller bearing used for the double disc cutter into high consideration since the average normal force from the double disc cutter exceeds the allowable force for a disc cutter with the diameter of 432 mm (17 inches). Finally, there is no practical problem in terms of axial stresses in the shaft of the double disc cutter since they are much lower than the yielding stress of the cutter shaft material, even though the axial stresses in the shaft of the double disc cutter are approximately twice as high as those from the single disc cutter.

Abstract

This paper presents the development of simulation system on EPB shield TBM Hood operation. In recent, EPB shield TBM is widely used in the tunnel construction. Since the hood system of the EPB shield TBM is most important to excavate the tunnel, it is necessary to perform the simulation of hood system to investigate the design and operation parameters prior to tunnel construction. In order to carry out this study, the scaled simulation system was designed and developed. The model tests were performed to verify the developed system. During the simulation, the earth pressures developed in the chamber during tunnelling were measured to evaluate the operation technique. The test results obtained by the developed simulation system show clearly the similar behaviour of TBM hood compared with the field data. It was also found that the ground loss during tunnelling is dependent on the change of earth pressure in chamber. Therefore, the simulation system developed in this study will be very useful to evaluate the operation technique of the TBM hood prior to tunnel construction. In addition, this system will be applied in a various condition of ground to get the operating information.

Abstract

This paper presents the screw conveyor operation efficiency of shield TBM in soft ground. In order to study the screw conveyor operation efficiency, the experimental and theoretical studies were carried out. In experimental study, the operating amounts of muck were examined and compared due to the screw conveyor operating parameters including types (Shaft and Ribbon screw), angles of screw and conveyor. The results obtained from the laboratory model tests were analysed and evaluated to suggest the most suitable muck operating parameters during the shield TBM tunnelling in soft ground. In conclusion, it is found the operation parameters to increase the screw conveyor efficiency. In addition, the information presented in this paper may be useful for developing the design technology of shield TBM in the future.

Abstract

Recently, tunnelling with TBM is getting popular for the construction of cable tunnel in urban area. Mechanized tunnelling method using shield TBM has various advantages such as minimization of ground settlement and prevention of vibration induced by blasting that should be accompanied by conventional tunnelling. In Korea, earth pressure balance (EPB) type shield TBM has been mainly used. Despite the popularity of EPB shield TBM for cable tunnel construction, study on the mechanical behavior of cable tunnel driven by shield TBM is insufficient. Especially, the effect of backfill grout injection on the behavior of cable tunnel driven by shield TBM is investigated in this study. Tunnelling with shield TBM is simulated using 3D FEM. The distance of backfill grout injection from the end of shield skin varies. Sectional forces such as axial force, shear force and bending moment are monitored. Vertical displacement at the ground surface is measured. Futhermore, the relation between volume loss and the distance of backfill grout injection from the end of skin plate is derived. Based on the stability analysis with the results obtained from the numerical analysis, the most appropriate injection distance can be obtained.

Abstract

Shear wave velocity was used to estimate the geotechnical characteristics (void ratio and shear strength) of ground near an underground rainfall storage facility. An oedometer cell was utilized to measure the shear wave velocity and the displacement of specimens. Shear strengths were obtained by direct shear tests. The relationships along the shear wave velocity, void ratio, and shear strength were verified and used to infer the shear strength profile with the depth. In addition, changes in shear strength due to the construction of the underground rainfall storage system were estimated using the suggested method. The results show that the in-situ shear strength deduced from the shear wave velocity-void ratio-shear strength relationship is in good agreement with that obtained from an in-situ investigation (SPT).

Abstract

Linear cutting test is known to be very effective to determine machine parameters (i.e. thrust force and torque) and to estimate penetration rate of TBM and other operation conditions. Although the linear cutting test has significant advantages, the test is expensive and time-consuming because it requires large size specimen and high load capacity of the testing machine. Therefore, a few empirical prediction models (e.g. CSM, NTNU and QTBM) alternatively adopt laboratory index tests to estimate design parameters of TBM. This study discusses the estimation method of TBM machine parameters and disc cutter consumption using punch penetration test and Cerchar abrasion test of which the researches are rare. The cutter forces and cutter consumption can be estimated by the empirical models derived from the relationship between laboratory test result with field data and linear cutting test data. In addition, the estimation process was programmed through which the design parameters of TBM (e.g. thrust, torque, penetration rate, and cutter consumption) are automatically estimated using laboratory test results.

Abstract

When a train enters the tunnel at high speed, the pressure wave occurs. When this pressure wave reaches at the exit of tunnel, some are either emitted to the outside or reflected in tunnel by the form of expansion wave. The wave emitted to the outside forms the impulsive pressure wave. This wave is called 'Micro Pressure Wave'. The micro pressure wave generates noise and vibration around a exit portal of tunnel. When it becomes worse, it causes anxiety for residents and damage to windows. Thus, it requires a counterplan and prediction about the micro pressure wave for high speed railway construction. In this paper, the effects of train head nose and tunnel portal shape were investigated by model test, measurement for the micro pressure wave at the operating tunnel as well as numerical analysis for the gradient of pressure wave in the tunnel. As results, a method for predicting the intensity of the micro pressure wave is suggested and then the intensity of the micro pressure wave is analyzed by the tunnel length and the cross-sectional area.

Abstract

Various types of external loads can be applied to the tunnel structure. In a shield tunnel, the vibration from the train may affect the behavior of the adjacent ground. In this study, the railway-induced vibration was estimated and applied to the shield tunnel through 3D numerical simulation. The effective stress analysis based on the finite difference method and Finn model was performed to investigate the potential of liquefaction below the tunnel. Furthermore, pore water pressure and displacement were monitored on a time domain; consequently, the liquefaction potential and dynamic response of the shield tunnel were analyzed. Consequently, it is confirmed that the generation of excess pore water pressure by train-induced vibrating load, however, the amount does not meaningfully affect the potential of liquefaction.
