In this study we determine the level of awareness among academic librarians of ten technological tools as outlined in American Libraries. Towards this end, we conducted a survey targeting 156 academic librarians in 25 Korean university libraries. Questionnaires were designed to determine both the viability and level of acceptance of the ten technological proposals in question. Conclusions drawn after analyzing the responses to the survey were as follows: 1) Customer service can be improved by first drawing up a list of technological skills required for staff members. Methods to develop the cataloging service to more closely match individual user preferences and the use of SMS to send alerts proved to be the proposals, of the ten that were proposed, that not only bore the greatest necessity but also proved to be the most effective once they were implemented. 2) Proposals that proved to be the most difficult to implement were: Using technology to improve the cataloging service to make it more capable of evolving according to the individual preferences of users; the special event wiki for users; and improvements in customer service arising from identifying and drawing up a list of technological skills required for staff members.
Emerging Web 2.0 services such as Twitter, Blogs, and Wikis alongside the poorly- structured and immeasurable growth of information requires an enhanced information organization approach. Ontology has received much attention over the last 10 years as an emerging approach for enhancing information organization. However, there is little penetration into current systems. The purpose of this study is to propose ontology implementation and methodology. To achieve the goal of this study, limitations of traditional information organization approaches are addressed and emerging information organization approaches are presented. Two ontology data models, RDF/OW and Topic Maps, are compared and then ontology development processes and methodology with topic maps based medical information retrieval system are addressed. The comparison of two data models allows users to choose the right model for ontology development.
Whereas traditional user interface are well accepted modes of information exchange, the new digital conversion type's of information media is relatively complex and provides new means of transaction with user interface. User interface can be decomposed into two component: the physical structure through which information media is controlled, and the presentation of the content. This research explores the two user interface element have different effect on the adoption of information media and, as such, can influence perceived usefulness, perceived easy of use, and intention of use. The hypotheses have been tested with the survey of 148 end-users examines two interface characteristics factors such as efficiency, error, design, entertainment, accuracy, and vividness, and so on. The research summarized in this paper decomposes the influence of interface elements of physical structure interface and content presentation interface to gain a better understanding of how interface stimulates user's perceived usefulness to adopt the information media.
In comparison to the services provided by the typical information systems, the historical records from the period before the modern times require additional information services to reflect the format and content oriented peculiarities of the data. The additional services also need to be considered in light of the users' information needs. For this study, a series of literature reviews was conducted to present the specific analysis criteria for the historical information services. Based on these criteria, the domestic and foreign historical information service provision and use status was investigated. In addition, users' information needs were identified and user-based historical information service improvement suggestions were generated.
This study aims to understand and compare the characteristics of two major approaches to solving global environmental problems-an academic approach including scholarly activities of environmental sciences and a practical approach of environmental movements led by NGOs-by employing informetric analysis methods. Knowledge structure of environmental sciences is depicted through co-citation networks of subject categories assigned to the cited journals in the discipline of environmental sciences for the 10-year period from 2000 to 2009. Furthermore, major interests of environmental NGOs are identified on the basis of external link data collected from web sites of the NGOs. Co-word analyses are also performed using the texts of journal papers in environmental sciences as well as news articles provided by NGO sites. Through the analyses, dominant subject areas of environmental sciences and environmental movements are identified demonstrating similarities and differences between the two approaches.
Recently, research community in Korea has shown a rapid growth in collaborating with Asian countries. In this study, we analyzed research collaboration among Asian countries using network analysis of co-authored papers as well as subject categories. The network of co-authored papers among Asian countries over the 5-year period since 2005 revealed that Japan, China, and Korea were positioned at the central part of the network and highly productive in collaborative research. In the analysis of the subject categories of co-authored papers in four different Asian regions with 2009 data, physics and material science were found the most productive subject fields in collaborative research in Northeast Asia. On the other hand, medical science was the most collaborative subject field in the remaining Asian regions.
This study developed a name access point control system for better performance of information retrieval from institutional repositories, which are equipped with author- generated metadata processes for self-archiving. In developing name access point control data for the system, the primary data were created from the existing authority. However, unlike the existing authority data, the primary data did not use any authority forms. Instead, the data utilized all the forms provided by the resources as access points. Specifically, field of activity(subject) and title information on authorship were used to distinguish between persons who have the same name. The result showed that the system improved the performance of the information retrieval. The system has been also expected to be utilized over other metadata provided by libraries, in addition to the institutional repositories, in order to provide better quality information.
The purpose of this study is to present suggestions for Korean libraries for disabled person after collecting and analyzing qualitative data upon library policies of national libraries, public libraries and libraries for disabled person in European countries including Sweden, UK and France. Korean national library support center for the disabled should be independent in order to have consistent policy and ability for its execution. It should also support private libraries for the disabled in inheriting professionalism and accumulated history. Developing alternative material, integrated catalogue and professional service is required by cooperative and systematic arrangements among national and public libraries for disabled person including schools and university libraries. Also, it should be able to grow not only on the basis of internal cooperation among libraries but also with the help of external organizations like social and legal systems, organizations related with the disabled and regional self governing bodies.
The purposes of this study are to find factors that have influences on the knowledge contribution activities, and to offer some suggestions to improve the knowledge contribution. Especially this study suggests to improve knowledge contribution by analyzing both on-line and off-line knowledge contribution activities in the public sector. The results of data analysis by structured equation model(SEM) indicate that leadership, intrinsic motivation, and knowledge quality significantly influence on-line and off-line knowledge contribution. Based on the results, the potential implications for the strategy of effective knowledge contribution are discussed.
This research analysed 73 samples to find out the recognition of librarians working in domestic public libraries from the information user's views. This research analyzed public library user's usual recognition level of librarian's work attitude, qualification, and service lever based of group of gender. For this, this research stands on the basis of previous researches and 3 types of modified questionnaire; recognition level of librarian's work attitude, recognition level of librarian's qualification, and recognition level of communication between librarians and information users using on nominal scale and interval scale. The research's result showed study outcome of librarian's work attitude was generally low with the mean of 2.81. Second, librarian's qualification of being a specialist was low with the mean of 2.84. Lastly, satisfaction of communication service level between information users and librarians was low with the mean of 2.89. Male and Female groups showed the difference of acknowledgement between each questions.
Terms collected from theological dictionaries in English and the Scripture are used in order to construct conceptual relationships of theological thesaurus. Using the terms, equivalence relationships, hierarchical relationships, and associative relationships as the basic relationships in thesaurus are constructed. In equivalence relationships, Hebrew, Greek, and Latin terms are included as descriptors and in hierarchical relationships, generic, instance, whole-part, and polyhierarchical relationships are constructed. Also, there is no big difference in the kinds of conceptual relationships between this theological thesaurus and the thesauri of other subjects. Examples of Biblical Theology are showed. Because Biblical Theology has a strong point to view the Scripture and Protestantism on comprehensive perspective. In this context, one of the main feature in the theological thesaurus is that there are a lot of the allegorical terms. Typology, which is the core structure causes this result.
Opinion retrieval is to retrieve items which are relevant to the user information need topically and include opinion about the topic. This paper aims to find a method to represent user information need for effective opinion retrieval and to analyze the combination methods for opinion features through various experiments. The experiments are carried out in the inference network framework using the Blogs06 collection and 100 TREC test topics. The results show that our suggested representation method based on hidden ‘opinion’ concept is effective, and the compact model with very small opinion lexicon shows the comparable performance to the previous model on the same test data set.
This study aimed to construct the Library Map Information System(LMIS) based on the Wiki theory of Web 2.0. We built this system because there was no collective source of information about every library in the world. Also, this system was developed to provide a library location information service by mashing-up with the Google Map. Through this study, the metadata applied to the newly constructed system was developed by using the Delphi method. A total of 13 experts including librarians of schools, public, academic, special, and national libraries as well as LIS faculty members and researchers, were commissioned as Delphi experts. Through three rounds of a Delphi survey analysis, the addition, modification, and deletion of the initial metadata elements was accomplished, and then the library contact/location information, library information, collection information, and event information was proposed. The metadata for LMIS was organized into four sectors and then 49 elements, each assigned to a sector.
The proposed method in this study is the Maximal Concept-Strength Recognition Method(MCR). In case that we don't know which database is the most suitable for automatic-classification when new database is imported, MCR method can support to select the most similar database among many databases in the legacy system. For experiments, we constructed four heterogeneous scholarly databases and measured the best performance with MCR method. In result, we retrieved the exact database expected and the precision value of MCR based automatic-classification was close to the best performance.
This study intended to make new suggestions by clarifying usefulness of analysis methodology for the intellectual structure of disciplines, which combines author co-citation analysis and author bibliographic coupling analysis. It also aimed to identify the recent research trend and key researchers recently doing research activities actively as well as the intellectual structure in the field of social welfare. It was found to be more efficient to conduct both author co-citation analysis and author bibliographic coupling analysis in order to identify traditional sub-areas of disciplinary subject or the research trend of actual researchers in examining the intellectual structure of a specific discipline.
