Abstract

This study analyzed the methods for representing and linking personal information in the linked data of National Library of Korea and provided suggestions for expanding the scope of identifying and linking of the personal information. As a result, the personal information as a subject has been dealt with a concept, where the personal information as a contributor has been linked with a vocabulary of personal name. In addition, there have not been assured of including additional information except existing authority data in the process of building the linked data. Therefore, this study suggested that linking personal information as a subject and personal information as a contributor was essential for the quality of linked data. In addition, we proposed to provide additional information related to the person in linked data for expanding the scope of access points in information discovery.

Abstract

The study goals are establishing a library management plan for the school for the blind in Korea and also developing a structured library program, which reflected the patron’s perception. We surveyed the students in three schools for the blind to identify their perception and usage statistics of the libraries. The analysis of the survey led to a school library program framework consisting of four types. To verify the applicability and effectiveness of the framework, we designed ten programs to meet the needs of the schools by consulting respective school’s teachers. We administered the second survey after the classes, and we found that there were positive increases in the frequency of library use, a number of books read, perception about the libraries, amount of information used, and self-directed learning willingness.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyze the research trends on the digital libraries in Korea. To achieve this objective, a total of 578 author-assigned English keywords were collected from the 272 major LIS journal articles published in Korea during last ten years-period, i.e., 2007-2016. The collected data were analyzed using NetMiner V.4 to discover their ‘degree centrality’ and ‘betweenness centrality’. As the results, ‘Academic Library’, ‘Reference Service’, ‘Public Library’, ‘E Resource’, and ‘E Book’ showed the most frequently conducted research topics, and ‘Academic Library’, ‘Reference Service’, ‘Information Behavior’, and ‘E Resource’ were the most influencing research topics. Finally, ‘Academic Library’, ‘Metadata’, ‘Information Behavior’, ‘E Resource’, and ‘Librarian’ seemed the most widely intervening research topics in this research.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effects of college students’ library satisfaction on college life satisfaction. In order to test this relationship, two surveys were conducted involving 360 college students at two universities in Seoul. The results of the first survey show that after controlling for the educational service satisfaction and facilities satisfaction, there is a significant influence of college students’ library satisfaction on college life satisfaction. The second study added variables for the three components of library service quality (librarian service quality, library resources and service quality, and library facilities and environmental quality). The results of the second survey show that there is a significant influence of library service quality on college library satisfaction, and again a significant influence of college students’ library satisfaction on college life satisfaction. Moreover, the results of two group analysis show that the influence of college library satisfaction on college life satisfaction is stronger in high usage group than low usage group. The theoretical and practical implications of this study are discussed.

Abstract

Through a wide variety of disciplines, practices on data access and re-use have been increased recently. In fact, there has been an emerging phenomenon that researchers tend to use the data sets produced by other researchers and give scholarly credit as citation. With respect to this practice, in 2012, Thomson Reuters launched Data Citation Index (DCI). With the DCI, citation to research data published by researchers are collected and analyzed in a similar way for citation to journal articles. The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics and intellectual structure of sociology field based on research data, which is one of actively data-citing fields. To accomplish this purpose, two data sets were collected and analyzed. First, from DCI, a total of 8,365 data were collected in the field of sociology. Second, a total of 12,132 data were collected from Web of Science with a topic search with ‘Sociology’. As a result of the co-word analysis of author provided-keywords for both data sets, the intellectual structure of research data-based sociology was composed of two areas and 15 clusters and that of article-based sociology was composed with three areas and 17 clusters. More importantly, medical science area was found to be actively studied in research data-based sociology and public health and psychology are identified to be central areas from data citation.

Abstract

The study seeks to establish a theoretical basis for extending the accessibility and availability of records to the public area. For the purpose, the study links the target and scope of archival literacy with official document literacy and proves the relationship between the elements of archival literacy and official public literacy. The literature reviews and survey comparing public officers and undergraduates are conducted. The results of the survey are as follow; public officers with official document literacy showed higher the degree of actual use and awareness than undergraduates; awareness was higher than the degree of actual use in all questions and factors; all correlations showed a positive correlation. In the public officers group, the correlation between ‘communication as public officers’ and ‘analytical concepts’ (0.626) was the highest, In the undergraduates group, the correlation between ‘communication as the public’ and ‘analytical concepts’ (0.561) was the highest, As a whole, the respondents show the highest correlation between ‘communication as the public’ and ‘analytical concepts’ (0.563); As a result, the group with official document literacy is more aware of the homogeneity between official document literacy and archival literacy.

Abstract

This study is to investigate the effects of personal characteristics and perceived interactivity on acceptance of mobile health information service by applying Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Also it examine whether the perceived interactivity, which is a key variable in the previous research studying the intention of PC-based health information service, works on the mobile environment equally. As a result of the analysis, the relationship between the health hypochondria of personal characteristics and perceived interactivity is negative, and the health concern and perceived interactivity is positive. Also, personal characteristics influence perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use of mobile health information service through perceived interactivity. Therefore, the perceived interactivity in the health information service of web and mobile environment is an important variable to mediate or directly affect other variables.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of cognitive developmental stages on library behaviors, reading tendency and perception on the library of the elementary students. For this study, a cognitive development tests and a questionnaire survey was conducted with students in their fourth and sixth grades in three elementary schools in Seoul and statistical analysis was carried out with the survey data. As a result, sixth grade students with the higher cognitive development had more requests for library information services than fourth grade students did. However, sixth grade students use library less and preferred to focus on the books for fun and personal interests, comparing with the fourth grade students. Their high level of cognitive development did not always have a positive effect on library behaviors and reading tendency. In addition, perception on the library of sixth grade students was lower than that of fourth grade students and it was influenced by library behaviors and reading tendency. It was also influenced positively by frequent use of library, active support by librarians and reading curriculum-related books. Based on the analysis, it is suggested that school library service should be provided based on the development stage of the upper grades of elementary students.

Abstract

This study suggests a new Hirsch-type composite index, ‘transposed g-index’ with a different viewpoint on h-index and g-index. From this new point of view, the axes of the graph describing the h-index and g-index are transposed so that the horizontal axis corresponds to the citation frequency threshold and the vertical axis corresponds to the number of documents. Based on this transposed graph, a new indicator transposed g-index is suggested and applied to library and information science researchers’ outcomes in Korean Citation Index database. The results show that this new index has more discriminating power than h-index and g-index, and is more sensitive to differences in quantitative aspects than quality of research. It is expected that the transposed g-index will be helpful for the multifaceted evaluation of the research outcome because it has differentiating characteristics that distinguish consistent researchers who continue to study from those who do not.

Abstract

Open science projects are being actively carried out globally. Publishing the results of public research (publications and data) in digital format and enhancing access to these materials are getting more important. Various research support tools are being used to support open research, open access, open data, open peer review and open research performance evaluation. We analyzed research support services to prepare open science movement in Korea. Korea is not ready for research data management and research collaboration except open access and institutional repositories. It can be seen as an urgent matter to analyze these international open science research support services carefully and reflect them in research support policy and service guideline.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze open access features of 1,890 Korean scientific journals registered in the Korea Citation Index (KCI). To this end, this study classified open access features of the target scientific journals into two main aspects, free access and free redistribution. The analysis results indicated that the target scientific journals had strong free access aspects. Based on websites, 67% of the target scientific journals allowed for free access without a login process and based on free database, 48% provided free access. On the other hand, the target scientific journals had weaker free redistribution aspects compared to their free access aspects. Only 14% of them offered the CC (creative commons) license. Another finding was that there were clear differences in open access aspects by academic field. Medicine, pharmacy, natural science, agriculture, fisheries, oceanography, and engineering had stronger open access aspects than humanities, sociology, arts, physical education, and interdisciplinary science. It appears that the difference was caused by the presence or absence of organizations supporting distribution of scientific journals of the fields concerned. To narrow the gap, it is recommended that the open access governance system is established to set up open access policies for Korean scientific journals regardless of academic fields and to support them.
