신경병성 통증은 신경 손상, 구심로차단 혹은 절단, 감염 그리고 대사성 장애 등에 의해서 나타나지만 구강안면 영역에서 발생되는 신경병성 통증 장애도 일반적인 신경병성 통증 장애와 마찬가지로 그 원인이 불분명한 경우가 많다. 특히 발작성인 경우에는 원인 제거가 불가능하기 때문에 신경병성 통증은 완치 보다는 증상의 조절에 초점을 맞추는 것이 현실적이며, 비외과적 방법으로는 구심성차단, 약물요법, 신경차단요법 등이 있고 심한 경우에는 외과적인 수술요법이 시행되고 있다. 그 중에서도 치과의사가 가장 쉽게 사용 할 수 있으면서도 실제 한 번쯤 고민해 보았을 약물요법을 중심으로 알아보겠다.
