보존학 분야에서 치아의 파절은 임상에서 흔히 접하는 문제이지만 동시에 환자와 많은 분쟁의 소지를 가지고 있는 분야이다. 치아의 파절은 야외 스포츠, 낙상, 충돌, 싸움 등에 의한 외상이 가장 많은 부분을 차지하지만 치과 임상에서 특별환 외상이 없이도 갑작스럽게 나타나기도 한다. 즉 환자의 나이가 중년 이상이거나, 환자가 잘못된습관들이 있는 경우에는 정상적인 치료 도중에도 치아는 파절될 수 있으며 또한 파절이 깊어 발치를 해야만하는 당혹한 순간을 경험하는 것이 드문 일은 아니다. 이는 외상과 달리 만성적으로 가해지는 내부 응력에의한 파절에서 기인한 문제들로 외상에 의한 파절보다치과 임상에서 치과 의사와 환자 사이에 분쟁으로 이어지는 경우가 빈번하다.
