This study aims to compare ego-centered journal citation identities among four domestic journals in library and information science. Ego-centered citation identity refers to the set of authors that an author frequently cites. The target journals for this study are Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science (KSLIS), Journal of the Korean Biblia Society for Library and Information Science (KBIBLIA), Journal of Korean Library and Information Science Society (KLISS), and Journal of the Korean Society for Information Management (KOSIM). As a result of citation/citee ratio (CCR), self-citing rates (SCR), and journal co-cited analysis, the journal citation identities of four journals contained the other three journals besides the ego journal and JASIST. Furthermore, KOSIM had the most diverse range of journal citation identity and the four journals mattered the intra-journal information. KLISS showed the most unique cited journal network structure among the four journals.
In this study, we conducted a literature review and exploratory research to identify the characteristics of recently popular video information and to propose the basic capabilities required for video information literacy. Through a literature review, the distinct characteristics of video information were examined from various perspectives, differentiating it from other types of information. Subsequently, we had one-on-one, in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 16 participants in their teens to 50s to collect their video usage experiences. The interview contents were categorized to create a codebook, and content analysis was performed. Based on this analysis, we derived the characteristics of video information. Finally, the characteristics of video information were identified through the literature review and interview analysis outcomes, and these characteristics were classified into properties of video and characteristics related to video information usage. Based on the identified characteristics of video information, this study proposed the basic capabilities required for video information literacy.
Despite many changes occurring in the objects and methods of reading, the importance of reading as the most effective means of developing human intellectual ability is consistently emphasized. However, in Korea, reading tends to be perceived as a part of tedious and rigid education or learning activities rather than an act of giving pleasure and joy while accompanied by fun and interest. In addition, compared to the high interest and emphasis on reading, discussions on reading programs to systematically implement them are relatively insufficient, and it is difficult to find a study in Korea that grasp the overall research trend in the field of reading programs. Accordingly, in order to generally examine research trends in the field of domestic reading programs, an intellectual structure analysis method based on keyword profiling was applied. In particular, basic analysis, keyword analysis, research area analysis, and analysis by period and year were performed in stages based on the keywords of theses and academic journal articles in the domestic reading program field retrieved from the RISS database. In addition, future research tasks were presented by comprehensively reviewing the research trends of domestic reading programs identified as a result of this intellectual structure analysis.
This study focused on the fact that limitations of implementing school-centric models and standards of information literacy construction. This study was conducted with the purpose of developing and validating an instructional model to effectively design and practice online information literacy instruction for upper elementary school students based on a public library. Through a review of prior literature and analysis of current status and cases, a primary model was developed including the definition and area of information literacy, learning stages and activities, conceptual and procedural model, and teaching and learning plan. In addition, the first and second expert surveys were conducted to evaluate the internal validity of the model. The final model was derived by synthesizing and converging the collected opinions. As a result of the study, the final model consisted of 7 areas: ‘Information literacy concept’, ‘Instruction component area’, ‘Conceptual model’, ‘Procedure model’, ‘Design principles and detailed guidelines’, and ‘Learning Steps and Activities’ and ‘Teaching and Learning Plan’.
The current debate in the academic community is on the criteria for predatory journals. Researchers are perplexed about what constitutes a predatory journal. The purpose of this study is to investigate how South Korean researchers discover and evaluate predatory journals. In order to achieve this, we collected 2,484 statements, comprising posts and comments, from Korean researcher communities, namely the Biological Research Information Center (BRIC), Hibrain.net, Phdkim.net, and the Scholarly Ecosystem Against Fake Publication Environment (SAFE). We divided the data into three primary categories—journals, publishers, and researchers—for the topic analysis. For each statement, we assigned 11 in-depth subtopic tags based on these categories. Six main points of contention emerged from the combinations of these sub-topic tags: (1) researchers’ confusion about predatory journals and discussions about research performance; (2)(3) researchers’ positive and negative perceptions of predatory journals; (4) researchers’ evaluation criteria for journal quality and problems associated with the quality of Korean journals; (5) changes in publishing brought about by the introduction of open access (OA) and associated issues; and (6) discussions on broader issues within the academic ecosystem. By using a qualitative approach to examine how South Korean researchers view predatory journals, this study aims to advance basic knowledge of the discourse around them in the communities of domestic researchers.
This study aims to check the effectiveness of ‘diligent search’ stipulated in Article 35-4 of the Copyright Act of Korea. ‘Diligent search’ is to identify the copyright holder and his or her contact information. But the process provided by the law includes many cases in which it is practically impossible to identify the relevant details, and includes unnecessary requirements. So it appears that improvement is needed. Based on this, it was proposed to improve the text of the Copyright Act (Article 35-4) and to abolish unnecessary provisions (Article 16-3 no.5~8) of the Enforcement Decree.
The purpose of this study is to understand the information use experience of total blindness with OTT. To achieve the study purpose, in-depth interview with nine total blindness using a semi-structured checklist was conducted. The data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s phenomenological method. This study has found 5 categories, 13 theme clusters, and 47 themes. The five categories are as follows: 1) the purpose of information use, 2) difficulties of information use, 3) handling of difficulty in information seeking, 4) perception and feeling, 5) improvement requirement The implications of this study are as follows; 1) There are no significant differences between total blindness and the general people of Information request topic in the use of OTT, 2) negative experience was connected with the accessibility with OTT, 3) there is a demand of better conditions with technical sides of OTT, 4) On the whole, they have a positive perception with OTT services.
This study aims to analyze the effects of work-life balance on organizational commitment and turnover intention, and the effects of organizational commitment on turnover intention, focusing on Generation MZ librarians in public libraries. A survey of 183 librarians born between 1980 and 2005, who work at public libraries in the Seoul Metropolitan Area, examined the subfactors of work-life balance such as work-family balance, work-leisure balance, work-growth balance, organizational commitment, and turnover intention. Multiple regression analysis revealed that work-family and work-growth balances had a significant positive effect on organizational commitment and a significant negative effect on turnover intention. Moreover, organizational commitment had a significant negative effect on turnover intention. Accordingly, this study suggests the need to implement a reward policy for night and weekend work and to strengthen work-family balance and work-growth balance at public libraries. Moreover, it suggests horizontal communication and strengthening autonomy to promote organizational commitment.
A school library is an institution that supports the school’s educational objectives through various educational activities based on information resources, and teachers’ perception is essential to connect resources and users. However, most studies have been conducted based on the self-perception of teacher librarians. This study aims to understand the effect of teachers’ experience of library programs and cooperative classes with the school library on their perception of the school library roles and librarian teachers’ professionalism. A questionnaire survey was conducted on 78 teachers at eight national and public high schools in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, and the results were statistically analyzed using factor analysis and regression. As a result, it was found that the teachers’ experiences affect their perception of the school library’s roles, especially informational, educational, and cultural roles. Also, the teachers’ experiences affect their perception of librarian teachers’ educational support and library expertise. Based on the results, considerations in school library programs and cooperative classes were suggested to improve teachers’ perception of the school library roles and librarian teachers’ professionalism.
As the recognition of data’s value increases, the role of data repositories in managing, preserving, and utilizing data is becoming increasingly important. This study investigates ways to enhance the trustworthiness of data repositories through obtaining CoreTrustSeal (CTS) certification. Trust in data repositories is critical not only for data protection but also for building and maintaining trust between the repository and stakeholders, which in turn affects researchers’ decisions on depositing and utilizing data. The study examines the CoreTrustSeal, an international certification for trustworthy data repositories, analyzing its impact on the trustworthiness and efficiency of repositories. Using the example of DataON, Korea’s first CTS-certified repository operated by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI), the study compares and analyzes four repositories that have obtained CTS certification. These include DataON, the Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC) from NASA, Yareta from the University of Geneva, and the DARIAH-DE repository from Germany. The research assesses how these repositories meet the mandatory requirements set by CTS and proposes strategies for improving the trustworthiness of data repositories. Key findings indicate that obtaining CTS certification involves rigorous evaluation of organizational infrastructure, digital object management, and technological aspects. The study highlights the importance of transparent data processes, robust data quality assurance, enhanced accessibility and usability, sustainability, security measures, and compliance with legal and ethical standards. By implementing these strategies, data repositories can enhance their reliability and efficiency, ultimately promoting wider data sharing and utilization in the scientific community.
This study analyzed the news media coverage of QRcodes in Korea over a 16-year period (2008 to 2023). A total of 13,335 articles were extracted from the Korea Press Foundation’s BigKinds. A quantitative and content analysis was conducted on the news frames. The results indicated that the quantity of news coverage has increased. The greatest quantity of news coverage was observed in 2020, and the most frequently discussed topic in the news was ‘IT_Science’. The results of the keyword analysis indicated that the primary words were ‘QRcode’, ‘smartphone’, ‘service’, ‘application’, and ‘payment’. The news media primarily focused on the QRcode’s ability to provide instant access and recognition technology. This study demonstrates that advanced information and communication technologies and the increased prevalence of mobile devices have led to a rise in the utilization of QRcodes. Furthermore, QRcodes have become a significant information media in contemporary society.
Analyzing research trends is essential for the sustainable development of a discipline and is important for understanding the value of prior research and laying the groundwork for subsequent research. This study aims to draw implications for the future direction of convergence research on the disclosure of information from various disciplines by comparing and analyzing the trends in disclosure of information research in Korea. For this purpose, we analyzed the publication frequency of information disclosure papers listed in the Korea Citation Index (KCI) from 2002 to 2023 and the publication trend by discipline as a time series. In addition, we compared the keyword relationships and specialized research topics of each discipline by applying network analysis and LDA topic modeling techniques to the names and keywords of papers in law, public administration, and library and information science. As a result of the analysis, the law focuses on legal regulations and policy improvement, public administration focuses on changing social needs and administrative operation methods, and LIS focuses on practical approaches to record management and disclosure of information. Based on this, future research directions include combining policy research in law with social change research in public administration and developing realistic policies and operational guidelines from the practical perspective of LIS. Such convergent research will enable the systematic and efficient implementation of disclosure of information systems, contributing to the guarantee of the public’s right to know and the enhancement of state transparency.
This study aims to determine the impact of digital literacy skills of middle-aged and older people using public libraries on their life satisfaction. For this study, a survey was conducted on 192 middle-aged and older people aged 40 to 64 living in area G. The collected data were analyzed using the statistical package SPSS 27 program. The analysis methods in this study included frequency analysis, descriptive statistical analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Duncan’s multiple range test for post-hoc analysis, and regression analysis. The results of this study are as follows: First, digital literacy competency has a significant positive impact on the life satisfaction of middle-aged and older adults; as their digital literacy skills improve, their life satisfaction increases. Second, digital literacy competency varies based on gender, education level, employment status, and average monthly income, influencing their engagement in activities such as study or work. Additionally, higher levels of digital literacy competency, as determined by the highest level of education, positively affect life satisfaction, leisure activities, and cultural life.
This study aimed to delve into the personal experiences of academic librarians as they perform their duties, seeking a holistic understanding of their professional experiences and the subjective experiences underlying them. To this end, the study conducted in-depth interviews with librarians, who were selected as research participants from private four-year universities, and analyzed the collected data using Giorgi’s phenomenological analysis method. The findings reveal that the experiences of academic librarians can be summarized as “ambivalent perceptions of the librarian profession,” “discrepancies between expectations and reality,” “discriminatory personnel practices within university organizations,” “growth and limitations derived from professional experiences,” and “adaptation and anxiety in response to rapid environmental changes.” A closer examination indicated that academic librarians continuously experience and resolve dilemmas within complex contexts. The findings of this study are expected to deepen the understanding of the profession of academic librarians and contribute to the development of practical strategies for workforce management and the improvement of working conditions.
