Abstract

Taking a comprehensive view of Japanese medical books represented by Prescriptions from the Heart of Medicine (Ishinpō 醫心方) and Japanese Names of Medical Herbs (Honzō Wamyō 本草和名), it can be found that there are many contents related to Chinese immortals wihin such texts. This is because traditional Chinese medicine and immortal culture share the same origin and promote each other throughout their historical development. Japanese medical books also embraced the immortal culture in learning traditional Chinese medicine, reflecting the cultural tradition of “not distinguishing between medicine and immortality (医道不分),” which was commonplace in ancient East Asian cultures. This article attempts to re-examine the significance of immortal culture in East Asian cultural exchanges by analyzing the immortal culture as it appears in Japanese medical books.
