Preliminary Studies on the Growth Performance of the Subtrophic Noble Scallop Chlamys nobilis in Korean Waters - with a Special Focus on Nursery Life

Abstract

To evaluate the aquaculture potential of a subtrophic scallop Chlamys nobilis in Korean waters, nursery growth of the species was studied on two remote Jeju coasts, Jigwi and Ongpo. The growth performance of the early life for 60 days from just settled stage was expressed as: SL = 0.1664e0.0579x(r2 = 0.924), where x stands for day after settlement and SL for shell length. The early spats sized 1mm on average shell length became 4.1±0.8 mm in a month nursery culture, thereafter 13.0 Received October 6, 2008; Accepted December 6, 2008 Corresponding author: Won, seung-hwan Tel: (82) 51-720-2363 e-mail: wsh@nfrdi.go.kr 1225-3480/24306 ± 1.9, 23.1 ± 3.1, 30.3 ± 4.3, and 33.6 ± 5.2 mm for consecutive 4 months on Jigwi coast. Depth-dependent growth gains with daily gains in parenthesis were 76.7 ± 7.7 (165.6 μm), 73.3 ± 7.3 (154.0 μm), 69.4±8.4 (140.0 μm), and 68.7±8.5mm (137.4 μm) for depths of 5, 10, 15, and 20 m, respectively. The growth difference by water depth was significant (P<0.05). Culture density was one of the most important parameters influencing the growth performance of the species in both locations. Overall, in our preliminary study, the growth performance of scallop in Korean waters was not as good as that in Japan, but it appeared to be worth doing further study for successful introduction to Korean waters.
