The purpose of this study is to suggest a motivational balancing perspective that helps to understand the addictive behaviors. Previous studies on motivation has mainly focused on introducing motivational factors and few studies explained dynamic associations between each motivations. The current study intends to expand the understanding of the overall motivation by focusing on the relationships between motivation factors and to suggest a motivational balancing perspective that helps to understand addictive behaviors. The author first explained that the basic state of motivation indicates the dynamics between homeostasis and tension. The author also introduced that autonomy, belonging, competence, and sense of goal which is generating competence are the key motives of motivational balancing theory. Next, the author discussed the dynamics between two axes of the motivational balancing theory and the problematic behaviors that may arise when the motivational factors are in a chronically unbalanced state. Finally, the author described the implications of motivational balancing theory in psychological counseling and addiction area and future direction of the theory.
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between neurotic tendency, internalized shame and alcohol addiction, and to test whether internalized shame mediates the relationship between neurotic tendency and alcohol addiction. This study showed that neurotic tendency had a significant effect on internalized shame and alcohol addiction, and internalized shame was mediated by the relationship between neurotic tendency and alcohol addiction. The main results were as follows: First, the neurotic tendency was statistically predicting alcoholism. The higher the neurotic tendency of personality traits, the more the alcoholic addiction was affected. Second, as a result of examining the predictive relationship of neurotic tendency to internalized shame, the higher the neurotic tendency, the more internalized emotions are experienced and the more negative emotions are experienced. Third, the neurotic tendency showed significant influence on alcohol addiction, and neurotic tendency was found to be a mediating role of internalized shame in predicting alcohol addiction. The higher the neurotic tendency of individual personality characteristics, the higher the internalized tendency to internalize the shame. This internalized shame leads to the use of pathological alcohol, leading to alcoholism. As a result, the prevention and treatment of alcoholism requires an understanding of neurotic tendencies classified as fundamental personality traits and efforts to develop treatment and recovery programs related to internalized shame, which are pathologically fixed emotional responses.
This research aimed to develop and prove the effect of a positive psychology-based music therapy program for the emotional adaptation of gambling addicts' families. The research subjects were selected gambling addicts' families who were visiting a counselling center for gambling related problems as well as members of a GA family support group. The experimental group(n=9) received a 90- minute weekly session of positive psychology-based music therapy 8 times, while the control group(n=10) received 8 sessions of personal counselling at a counselling center for gambling-related problems. The measurement tools included PANAS(Positive Affect Negative Affect Scale), CES-D(Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale), PSS(Perceived Stress Scale), and PTS(Positive Thinking Scale). To analyze the maintenance of the therapy's effect in the experimental group, a repeated measure ANOVA and a paired samples t-test were performed with the pre-post, pre-maintenance, and post-maintenance variables of psychological adaptation. The experimental group demonstrated significantly decreased negative emotion, depression and perceived stress levels compared to the control condition. And the experimental group demonstrated significantly high positive emotion and thinking compared to the control group. This result suggests that positive psychology-based music therapy may have clinical utility in the emotional adaptation of gambling addicts' families.
The purpose of this study is to examine the validity of the amendment contents and directions of the Gambling Disorder diagnosis criteria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5th edition(DSM-5) published by the American Psychiatric Association. Specifically, we examined using domestic data whether it is reasonable to argue that the deletion of the 'legal problems' criterion and the lowering of the cut-off score (5 -> 4) did not affect the prevalence estimate as in the DSM-5 revision committee. To do this, we analyze the satisfactory proportion of 'legal problems' criterion using a part of the adult prevalence data(n=1,323) of Kim et al.(2005) and a part of youth data(n=211) of Kim et al.(2016), and the diagnostic criteria of DSM-IV and DSM-5 were compared for each gender and sampling location. The results were as follows. First, as a result of analyzing the satisfactory proportion of 'Illegal Act' criteria, adults reported a very low score of 2.9%(10th place), males who have a relatively high level of seriousness reported 4.5%, and gamblers reported 7.3%. However, on the other hand, the adolescents reported a higher score of 26.6%(2nd place) than the adults. Second, as a result of the comparison between the diagnostic systems, there were significant differences in all groups except for the female adolescent group. The diagnostic criteria of DSM-5 showed that unlike the claims of experts who participated in the reorganization, the severe group of gambling problems had more unstable characteristics than the DSM-IV to classify more people as addicts. The results of this study were discussed in terms of the limitations of the gambling problem diagnosis criteria and its limited application.
