Abstract

Electrochemical behavior of the heavy lanthanide complexes of alizarin red S(ARS) has been investigated by d. c. polarography, differential pulse polarography and cyclic voltammetry. The reduction mechanism at a mercury electrode of alizarin red S as a complexing ligand showed a one step of two-electron transfer and the electron process is found to be reversible. Alizarin red S forms a 3:1 adsorptive complexes with lanthanides and the complexes are reduced via one step of two-elctron. The reduction potential of complex wave(<TEX>$P_2$</TEX>) shifted more negatively than the ligand wave(<TEX>$P_1$</TEX>). The linear calibration curves of the decreacing <TEX>$P_1$</TEX> and increasing <TEX>$P_2$</TEX> is obtained when the lanthanide concentration varies from <TEX>$2.0{\times}10^{-6}M$</TEX> to <TEX>$6.4{\times}10^{-5}M$</TEX> under the condition of pH 9.5, 0.1M LiCl and <TEX>$1{\times}10^{-3}M$</TEX> ARS.
