코골이는 매우 흔한 질환이다. 인구의 20~30%,중고년층의 40~60%가 보고되기도 한다1). 흔히 코골이 환자는 배우자나 동료가 알려주기 까지는 모르는경우가 많다. 그래서 인지 코골이는 그동안 나쁜 잠버릇 정도로 인식되어 왔고, 질병으로 인식되지는 않았지만, 상부 기도의 폐쇄에 의한 폐쇄성 수면무호흡증(Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome)으로 진단 받은 환자의 대부분은 코를 고는 것이 확인 되며,코골이 환자의 다수에서 폐쇄성 수면 무호흡증이 관찰된다는 점에서 최근 사회적 주목을 받고 있다. 이에 저자는 코골이 및 폐쇄성 수면무호흡증을 의학적 및 치의학적 관점에서 임상양상, 진단방법에 대해정리하고자 한다.
