Abstract

Today, we have often heard that information is a national resources, perhaps our most important national resources, and that government should recognize this and develop a national policy for the effective management and use of information. But traditionally the library has played a rather passive role in selecting, acquiring, preserving and transfering information. Now we have faced greater and much more diverse and more urgent demand from users and we have to cope effectively with a massive increase in volume and in cost in selecting, acquiring, storing and retrieving information. Individual libraries can no longer keep pace with the published outputs of the world. The solution of these problems lies in "national planning and in cooperation through inter-library cooperation and in the application of data processing to library operations." Also at the national level lies the responsibility for total bibliographic control of the national information output and for the interfacing of this with other national and international systems; for the development, adoption and maintenance of, standards in all areas affecting library work; for the provision of services based on centrally created and maintained bibliographic data files, and for planning and policy development of the national information system.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to study the classification and arrangement system, the original texts, and the bibliographic deseription of Dae-Jang-Mock-Lock. The results of this study can be summarized as followings; 1. The first carving of Dae-Jang-Mock-Lock was assumed to be completed at latest by 1087 (King Sun-Jong 4, Koryo) when the first carving of Dae-Jang-Kyong, the complete collection of Buddhist Sutra, mas finished. Henee, Dae-Jang-Mock-Lack is safely said to be the oldest catalog in Korea. 2. The major function of Dae-Jang-Mock-Lock mas to facilitate the job of printing, managing, or arranging the Sutra tablets, rather than to serve as its references. 3. Dae-Jang-Mock-Lock mas classified in accordance with the classification sys tern of Gae-Woon-Suck-Kyo-Lock, a chinese Buddhist catalog. This system classified the complete collection of Buddhist Sutra into the three categories of "Mah<TEX>$\={a}$</TEX>y<TEX>$\={a}$</TEX>na Tripitaka", "Hinayan<TEX>$\={a}$</TEX> Tripitaha", and "collected Biographies of Samgha", at the first gradation. And then the Mah<TEX>$\={a}$</TEX>yan<TEX>$\={a}$</TEX> Tripitaka mas divided into the three categories of "Mah<TEX>$\={a}$</TEX>y<TEX>$\={a}$</TEX>na Sutra", "Mah<TEX>$\={a}$</TEX>y<TEX>$\={a}$</TEX>na Uparaksa", and "Mah<TEX>$\={a}$</TEX>y<TEX>$\={a}$</TEX>na Upadesa", at the second gradation. In the same manner the "Hinayan<TEX>$\={a}$</TEX> Tripitaka was divided into "Hinayan<TEX>$\={a}$</TEX> Sutra", "Hinayan<TEX>$\={a}$</TEX> Uparaksa", and "Hinayan<TEX>$\={a}$</TEX> Upadesa". The "Collected Biographies of Samgha" was divided into Brahman Samgha and Chinese Samgha. For this reason we Can name this main classification system as a Tripitaka Classification. 4. The first carving tablets of the Buddhist Sutra from Choen Shelf (天函) to Young Shelf (英函) were the same Sutra that were included in Gae-Woen-Suck-Kyo-Lock (開元釋敎錄), except those 4 omitted sutras of 22 volumes. But the other 7 sutras of 24 volumes were included as an extra addition in "Dae-Jang-Mock-Lock." 5. The 40 shelves and 376 volumes of Buddhist Sutra from the Doo Shelf (杜函) to the Kyong Shelf (輕函) in Dae-Jang-Mock-Lock were copied from the texts of Guran Edition (契丹本) 6. The 36 shelves of Buddhist Sutras from the Bun shelf (磻函) to the Mil shelf (密函) in Dae-Jang-Mock-Lock were the same as those included in Sock-Jung-Woen-Suck-Kyo-Lock (續貞元釋敎錄), except the 3 omitted sutras.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is (i) to establish the principles particularly appropriate for the arrangement of archival collections is korea, and (ii) to produce a workable model of classification scheme in conformity with the established principles. The archival collections in korea are roughly devided into two groups as follows. (1) The collections of professional institutions of archives such as Korean National Archives. (2) The collections preserved by libraries, museums, and other similar institutions as a secondary collection, and these groups of collections are generally non-systematic collecting. For the arrangement of the former collections, the concept of "respect des fonds" which is universally accepted principies in archives are also applicable. But in case of the arrangement of the latter collections, the above mentioned principles are inappropriate because its collections a re built in separate pieces of documents and records without any relevance to the original function or structure of the corporation. Consequantly it is badly needed to make some devices for the arrangement of these archival collections since the archival collections of korea, in the majority of cases, belong to the latter. The author produced a tentative classification scheme, and adapted the korean traditional form (or type) of documents and records as a cardinal principle of the classification. The scheme is presented at the end of this paper.

Abstract

The W<TEX>$\v{o}$</TEX>njong Kongsin Nock<TEX>$\v{o}$</TEX>n (原從功臣錄券) is a kind of the official document to granting a privilege and stipend which was awarded in 1395 to Kim Ch<TEX>$\v{o}$</TEX>lni (金天理). devoted his master who was latter set on a throne of the first King Taejo of Yi dynasty. In the present study are concretely verified that the Nock<TEX>$\v{o}$</TEX>n is bibliographically invaluable archives of early Yi dynasty in the viewpoint of the followings: 1) Unique material of biographies covering those meritorious retainers to deserving the foundation of Yi dynasty. 2) Worthy material of history including the meritorious examples on the founding of a new Kingdom which were omitted in the true record of the Yi dynasty. 3) Priceless material of philology written in the Korean ancient languages to use the letter of Yi-du (吏讀).

Abstract

The main purpose of the present study is to survey the major abstracting bulletins of national nature in Korea, to define such problem areas as lacunae, duplicates and limitation in coverage in the abstracting services currently available in Korea, and to make some suggestions for action for improving the abstracting services in the light of general principles and the tradition and situations unique to Korea. The major conclusions reached at this study are summarised as follows: (A) A new abstracting bulletin of general nature covering the whole field needs to be created in each of the following fields where no established abstracting service is available for the outcome of research and development activities in Korea. (1) Language (2) Religion (3) Art (4) Language (5) Literature (6) History (B) A new specialised abstracting bulletin needs to be created in each of the following fields of science where abstracting services limited in coverage are partially available. (a) Statistics (b) Sociology (c) political science (d) Public administration (e) Law (f) Folk lore (g) Military science (2) Pure sciences (a) Mathematics (b) Chemistry (c) Astronomy (d) Geology (e) Mineralogy (f) Life sciences (g) Botany (h) Zoology (3) Applied sciences (a) Agriculture (b) Architectural engineering (c) Mechanical engineering (d) Electrical engineering (e) Chemical engineering (f) Manufacturing industry (g) Domestic science (C) Publication of the abstracting bulletins suggested in (A) and (B) above may be ideally carried on by a qualified learned society established in the respective field. and should be financially supported by the public fund under the provisions of Art. 27 of the Research Promotion Act of 1979. (D) The current practice of adding the author's abstract and keywords to each of the records of the "Doctoral Theses in Humanities and Social Sciences" part of the" Catalogue of Doctoral and Master's Theses Submitted to the Universities in Korea" published by the National Assembly Library should be applied to all the other parts, i. e. to the parts of the "Master's Theses in Humanities and Social Sciences" and of the "Doctoral and Master's Theses in Natural Sciences': which will not only increase the Catalogue's use value but also discourage appearance of various theses abstracts of individual academic institutions such as the" Abstracts of the Doctoral and Master's Theses Submitted to Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology" which will in turn reduce inefficiency involved in the abstracting services at national level. (E) A general abstracting bulletin covering most part of the outcome of research and development activities in Korea other than that covered by the existing abstracts needs to be created to be temporarily. used till the abstracting journals suggested in this study will be fully available. A realistic way of having such a bulletin may be to expand the present coverage of "The Abstracts of the Reports of the Government-sponsored Projects" currently published by Korean Research Foundation.

Abstract

According to the principle of KCR (Korean Cataloging Rules), all headings should be done in Korean. But due to the existence of homonym, arising between Korean and Chinese character, both of them are used in Korea, it is impossible to distinguish original Chiness character of author's name. Therefore, a method to correctly distinguish the Heading in Korean by co-writing Chinese character for headings in Korean character in the author space of body of the entry is presented.

Abstract

The history of recording and conserving for maintenance the human's memory from ancient times to modern's has brought about a lot of changing process of the recorded information media with developing in culture, and each society has made important recorded materials in his library as essentially the social apparatus. But most of them that were damaged by factors of the natural disaster, humidity, temperature, light, fungi and insects in the library, and were resulted in deterioration and losing the numerous materials. For removing the inevitable phases repeated, there are studying for counterplan of the fundamental environment factors about preservation, restoration and chemical research of materials in advanced countries, but I get a few researches about protecting the cultural properties. Therefore I research the survey of the actual conditions on 72 university libraries centering around them, and then I have researched the collection rate 81 percent, 58 university libraries. (local : 35, in seoul : 23) As the result of this research, I propose the model of the environment factors of conserving the library materials. 1) To apply the equipment of processing the radiant energy to the new construction and buildings. 2) To remove factors that occur fungi and insects by facilities being controlled relative humility, temperature, and to equip the ventilation arrangement in the library. 3) To shelve all acquired and bound materials after proceeding the vacuum fumigator. 4) Those who want to enter into the library stack were surely taken in sterilzing their hands and shoes, and must put on the gown. 5) To use the vacuum dusting thing (machine) for removing the dust without spreading out the floor of the library at any time. 6) To set up the gas automatic fire extinguisher worked by smoke sensor. 7) To assist the research into the preservation, natures and environment of recorded materials, and to supply financial funds for librarian. 8) To hold regularly the workshop be able to educate the methods of preservation materials by the constant system. (Library Association) 9) To add to responsibilities on certification of preservation materials for librarian. 10) To hold the constant committee system in each library. 11) To keep up with the ideal environment (humidity, temperature, light, ventilation, etc.) of preservation materials in the arrangement room, and to put on the gown.
