Abstract

Purpose: Studies on social exclusion from a sensory perspective are rather limited in state-of-the-art literature, especially in exploring the relationship between social exclusion and shape preference from a sensory marketing perspective. The present study aims to explore the effect of social exclusion on consumers' shape preference (angular vs. rounded) and the underlying mechanism. Research design, data and methodology: The relationship between social exclusion and consumers' shape preference was investigated in Study 1 using a one-way between-subject design (being excluded vs. being included), and the mediation effect of sense of control has been examined in Study 2 via a between-subjects design (being excluded vs. being included) ×2 (angular vs. rounded). Both studies were conducted on the Credamo data platform in China, and evaluated by one-way ANOVA. Results: The results showed socially excluded consumers prefer the product with angular design rather than socially included consumers, and this effect can be mediated by sense of control. Conclusions: This paper contributes academically for investigating the research area of the sense of control and explores the influence of the control needs of humans on consumer behaviors. Furthermore, it also clarifies new potential psychological role of shape preference - the recovery of the sense of control - to enrich the psychological mechanisms of shape preference.

Abstract

Purpose: Dairy marketing cooperatives operate in the agricultural sector of the Ethiopian economy and are supposed to increase the efficiency of the marketing system. This paper aims to study factors affecting the participation of farm households' in dairy marketing cooperatives. Research design, data, and methodology: The research has focused on one primary question. What are the possible factors that affect farm households' participation in dairy marketing cooperatives? The survey questionnaire was developed and an interview was made using enumerators. A total of 1500 sample households were selected randomly using the method of sampling with probability proportionate to size. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis (binary logit model) was used for analysis. Results: The study result revealed that among thirteen explanatory variables hypothesized to affect dairy producer farmers' participation in dairy marketing cooperatives; eleven were found to be statistically significant. From these findings, it is observed that members of the dairy cooperatives have significant advantage over nonmembers. Conclusions: Both internal and external intervention measures are suggested. Internally, the cooperatives' board of directors should design appropriate strategies to attract nonmembers to improve future participation, and, externally, government, NGOs, and other stakeholders need to emphasize methods that increase nonmembers' participation in dairy marketing cooperatives.

Abstract

Purpose: This study estimates the threshold values of institutional quality through investigating the non-linear effect of six sub-indices of Worldwide Governance Indicators on FDI inflows in 34 developing countries in Asia and Eastern Europe over the period from 2000- 2017. Research Design, data and methodology: GMM EGLS is employed which does not include the lagged value of the dependent variable as an independent variable. As a proxy for the institutional quality, either one of the six sub-indices of WGI from World Bank or the composite index obtained through a principal component analysis is used in a separate model. Results: An improvement in institutional quality, when the quality stays below a certain threshold level, does not increase FDI inflows, and only when the quality is above the threshold, it can positively influence FDI inflows. The threshold values of political stability and absence of violence, government effectiveness, and rule of law are relatively higher than those of the other dimensions of WGI. Conclusion: Institutional quality of the developing economies of Asia and Eastern Europe has a non-linear effect on FDI inflows. The target countries need to upgrade their institutional quality above the threshold in order to attract more FDIs.
