Abstract

A source of records is critical and highly valuable for records management. The compositions and functions of an administrative organization, which is the source of public records, are changing according to its frequent reorganizations. In particular, changes in local governments are frequent, and the possibility of change increases over time. The processing department is responsible for various records management tasks as the source and producer of records; however, its scope of qualifications is unclear. As such, this study aims to clarify these sources of records and suggest ways to improve their management. For the objective, this study selected D regional local government and analyzed the forms and frequency of its administrative organizational changes. In particular, the processing department’s modified organizational functions and compositions due to reorganizations were also examined. Through the analysis, problems concerning records sources that could arise from changes in the administrative organization and processing department were identified, and improvement plans for records management were suggested.

Abstract

This study attempted to present the direction of the documentation strategy to lay the foundation for preserving and using the modern and contemporary publishing culture in Daegu. To this end, the authors applied the phase of the ”documentation area definition and preliminary analysis” suggested in Hackman’s model. In the preliminary analysis phase, the authors investigated the cases of documentation on specific topics and conducted interviews with those concerned with documenting the publishing culture of Daegu. The findings of interviews were presented by the categories, such as ”the value of Daegu’s modern and contemporary publishing culture,” ”the object and method of collection,” ”documentation group,” and ”difficulties and limitations.” With these findings, the authors proposed the main elements of a documentation strategy and revised it based on the feedback from two archivists. The proposed elements consist of the purpose, temporal, geographical, and morphological ranges, roles by group, reference sources, prior work, and the consideration for collection and operation. The preliminary analysis of this study will serve as a foundation for preserving and transmitting Daegu's publishing culture.

Abstract

In modern society, there remain underprivileged communities that do not perform their own archival activities and documentation. Thus, many outside citizen archivists take the role of documenting the lives and activities of such communities on their behalf. However, ensuring the partyhood of these citizen archivists who are not part of the community proves to be problematic. This study aims to analyze how outside citizen archivists acquire partyhood in the process of documenting underprivileged communities through a case study labeled “Citizen Archivist Training Project” in Wanwol-dong, an area in Busan with a huge prostitution business. First, the process of acquiring partyhood in the outside citizen archivists’ documentation of underprivileged communities was divided into three stages, following the literature review process. Second, this partyhood acquisition process was investigated stage by stage through interviews with participants in the case study in Wanwol-dong. Third and finally, following the investigation’s findings, the attitude and position outside citizen archivists should have and take, respectively, in documenting underprivileged communities were identified.

Abstract

Archival appraisal is a key area of archival science. This study aims to identify the knowledge structure of archival appraisal and propose appropriate translation terms. To this end, 34 entry terms related to archival appraisal were first extracted from 146 entries in the Encyclopedia of Archival Science, a leading encyclopedia in the field, and terminologies were categorized based on content analysis. Second, the contents described in the entries were assessed for each category, and the main concepts and flow of discussions were also examined. Third and last, suitable translations for each entry term were presented, and considerations were suggested for the translations, such as the application of appropriate principles of equivalence. Specifically, terms such as “records appraisal” and “archival appraisal” were recommended to be used separately.

Abstract

Photographic archives of universities are one of the most valuable types of records that establish the university’s identity and provide historical evidence. Unlike text records, however, they are weak in conveying meanings. Therefore, it is difficult to support users' search and utilization unless the information of photo records is comprehensively described. In this study, for the university photo archives, we tried to structure the classification system of photo archives and develop a metadata set that reflects the category characteristics in the classification. To this end, the photo archives classification system and metadata elements of domestic and American university archives were analyzed and based on this, the model of information structure was proposed. The information structure model presented in this study can help university archives improve the data quality of their photo archives and support users with the abundant discovery of photo archives.
