기능적 자기공명영상을 이용한 두 실험에서, 한국어-영어의 이중언어자들의 내현적 언어산출 과정을 조기습득자(실험 1)와 후기습득자(실험 2)에게서 검토하였다. 일상적인 생활과 가까운 과거에 관한 질문을 주고, 그에 대한 이야기를 속으로 말하도록 하였다. Kim 등(1997)의 과제와는 달리, 촬영 전에 말할 것을 미리 연습시키지는 않았다. 영상 분석은 SPM 99를 사용하였다. 실험 1에서는 조기 습득자 6명을 대상으로 하였다. 결과, 두 언어의 산출 모두에서, 주로 전중심회(precentral gyrus)와 중전두회(middle frontal gyrus)의 활성화가 관찰되었으며, 한국어(L1)를 말할 때나 영어(L2)를 말할 때, 비슷한 영역이 활성화되는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 실험 2에서는 사춘기 이후 학교에서 영어를 습득한 후기 습득자 6명을 대상으로 같은 실험을 실시하였다. 후기 습득자의 활성화 영역은 조기 습득자와 상당히 달랐다. 한국어(L1)의 산출에는 좌반구 하전두회, 좌반구 precuneus, 좌반구 putamen, 좌측 시상과 후 대상회와 우반구의 상 전두회 등 다양한 영역이 포함되는데 반하여, 영어(L2)의 산출은 주로 좌반구 중 전두회과 대상회(cingulate gyrus)에서의 활성화가 관찰되었다. 전반적으로 두 언어를 구사하는데 사용되는 뇌 영역이 상당히 다른 것으로 나타났다. 또한 후기 이중언어자의 L2의 산출에는 전두엽 영역이 좀더 관여함을 알 수 있었다. 조기습득자의 경우에는 두 언어의 산출에 비슷하거나 동일한 영역이 관여하며 말하기 행위 자체에 좀더 초점을 둔다고 보인다. 후기습득자의 경우에는 두 언어의 활성화 영역이 상당히 달라서, L2를 말할 때 전두엽이 좀더 관여하였다. 이러한 결과는 전두엽이 후기습득자에서 L2의 산출에 좀더 중요한 역할을 한다는 사실을 시사한다.
