The space designated for kindergarten and elementary school students, who accounted for half of all users of the presidential archives, is now lacking, with the archives’ programs focusing on exhibitions and field trips. With this, an experience exhibition is seen as the most effective way to communicate the value of presidential records and archives based on the theory of cognitive development. Therefore, this study proposes an experiential exhibition program for children about presidential archives based on the experience economy under theories that are recently getting attention. The Presidential Archives through the Experiential Exhibition program for children proposed by this study will become a place for the cultural communication of all generations.
In archival discourse, social memory has been discussed for some time. Despite this, however, theoretical studies have not been prolific at all in the Korean archival community. Many Western scholars have argued that archivists should consider memory rather than records for archival preservation because the inclusiveness of the former will fill the gaps in the latter. Social memory that is shared and transmitted across generations in society would include the stories of marginalized groups of people who are often neglected in official documents. Archivists can reconstruct the diverse narratives of a variety of social groups based on social memory, and this would be their social responsibility. In this sense, it is archivists who exercise power regarding how history will be written in the future because they determine what would be preserved in archives: mainstream culture with official records or a broader spectrum of diverse stories of people in society. From this perspective, this paper intends to understand how memory is discussed in archival discourse and to review how archives and history are associated with memory in theories and practices.
This study aims to present the reorganization plan for the effective operation of the Information Disclosure System by researching on problems with regard to the system’s actual operation. For that purpose, this study has examined issues by conducting an investigation regarding a survey by personnel in charge of the system as well as the status of the Information Disclosure System in central administrative agencies. By examining the issues presented, a number of problems were identified for which this study suggests plans for solutions. The solutions proposed in this study are as follows: a) all agencies must establish a department dedicated to information disclosure and improve their system to meet any increase in the amount of work by flexibly allocating human resources according to the workload, b) a uniform and standardized operation guide must be created, c) education programs with regard to the original Information Disclosure System should be expanded, and d) so on.
This study aims to understand the concept and changes of the records management of InterPARES based on the analysis of background, main research interests, and major achievements of IP3 and ITrust. To this end, this study conducted a content analysis of IP3 and ITrust to drive main keywords. This study also utilized word clouds from IP project titles. In addition, a comparative analysis of IP3 and ITrust was conducted based on the environment, scope, core research areas, keywords, objectives, and record management life cycle perspectives. The research identified that InterPARES research was widely expanding the content and subject areas of the study: 1) to apply across the life cycle, as well as long-term preservation; 2) to focus on the concept of trust as well as the concept of authenticity; and 3) to include the concept of the Internet, digital forensics, and the open government along with electronic records.
This paper reports the evaluation of six open-source software systems for participatory digital archives. This is an effort to create a digital platform for the social memory of No Gun Ri, which was first recognized in 1999 as a civilian massacre. The process of how it was reported and investigated is critical to understanding this brutal incident. In addition, the course of its cultural recovery has witnessed the reconstruction of the No Gun Ri memory. Thus, it is important to embrace the social memory around the massacre in these archives. In consideration of a virtual space for memory, this study takes the form of participatory archives to provide a mechanism in which anyone can share their memories. As a way to find a digital archives system for No Gun Ri, this study analyzed open-source software based on identified functions and requirements for participatory digital archives. Knowing the details of digital systems, this study discussed how contents for social memory can be stored and used in a digital system.
Performing arts are composite art forms made through the collective participation of people who are responsible for a variety of roles with a multidimensional context. This study presents an analysis of the context to be expressed in the process of the arrangement and description of records of performing arts, with a focus on the relationship between performance work and performance planning, the relationship between performance planning and individual performance, the relationship between performance and people who participated in the performance, relationship between records and records, and the relationship between performance and records. With this, this study proposes a logical hierarchical structure that is required to express the context of the inner relationship of performing arts archives. It also suggests a model of sequential organization to describe the inner logic of the relationship between records and records.
A topic map was designed as an efficient information retrieval method that is optimized for classification, organization, and navigation through the use of a semantic link network above information resources. With this, this study aims to design a topic map-based university archives retrieval system to provide the relevant information retrieval. For this study, electronic records that relate to the academic administration within two years of D university were collected, and topic map editing was carried out with Ontopia Omnigator. Topics were classified according to their functional analysis of academic administration. In the end, the number of topics was finalized as 626, with 6 types in general: academic work, staff, college register, student, university, etc. Association was separated into six types as well, which were formed with consideration to the relationships among topics. In addition, there are seven occurrence types: register class, register number, register date, receiver, title, creator, and identifier. It is expected that the associative nature of the designed topic map-based retrieval system in this study will make navigation of large records easy and allow incidental discovery of knowledge.
In a situation where the recognition of archival services remains minimal, an evaluation of archival information services by users could provide a better understanding of users’ practical needs and present helpful information for improved services. A service evaluation by users using questionnaires was conducted in university archives, which can similarly categorize their user groups and have frequent interactions with the users for the provision of services. Questionnaires suitable for the evaluation of university archives were developed based on the review of the evaluation tools in archival information services. From April to October 2015, 113 users’ evaluation results were collected from 13 university archives. As a result of goodness of fit tests, the users’ service evaluation items were categorized into four parts: Use Results, Provision of Information on Archives, Accessibility to Archives, and Interaction. For those four parts, evaluation by descriptive statistics, T-test, correlation analysis, and regression analysis were conducted. Users evaluated Interaction parts highly while they were less satisfied with Provision of Information on Archives. T-test results showed that university archives with search engines and with electronic records management systems were evaluated higher than archives without such technology. In the regression analysis, the Interaction and Provision of Information on Archives parts were found to have an influence on the Use Results part.
Previously, the International Council of Archives (ICA) provided the General International Standard Archival Description (ISAD(G)) and the International Standard Archival Authority Record for Corporate Bodies, Persons and Families (ISAAR(CPF)) for the systematic archival description by the Committee on Best Practice and Standards. Recently, the new conceptual model and ontology, which is called “Record in Context” (RIC), is being developed by the ICA Experts Group on Archival Description (EGAD). For developing the new archival standard, ICA EGAD has referenced the archival standards of Australia, Spain, and Finland, as well as the FRBRoo integrated model of the museum and library fields and the legacy ICA’s descriptive standards. This study, therefore, examined these international trends on the archival descriptive standards and derived a number of suggestions for improvement. As a result, descriptive standards are changing from the guidelines for the standardized archival description to the upper conceptual model and ontology for the flexible archival description and sharing of archival metadata. There is a need to adapt the change of the information environment and promote cooperation among cultural heritage institutions.
