Abstract

This study aims to propose desirable operational strategies for public library programs as a means to alleviate the daily difficulties faced by married immigrant women. To achieve this, We conducted an analysis of 326 multicultural programs from 132 institutions, all of which were supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2022. The purpose was to gain an understanding of the current situation and identify any issues related to these programs. Additionally, we conducted interviews with married immigrant women to gain insights into the challenges they encounter in Korean society and to determine their specific demands regarding library programs. Furthermore, we interviewed librarians responsible for multicultural services to better comprehend their experiences in managing such programs and to understand their perceptions of multicultural services for married immigrant women. Based on these findings, we have proposed four operational strategies for public library programs targeting married immigrant women. These strategies include: 1) Program content, 2) Program operation method, 3) Building a personal network and utilizing human resources, 4) Collaboration with other institutions.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find ways to improve the legal system for supporting libraries for the disabled. For the stdy, related precedent studies were historically analyzed, and the legal definition of libraries for the disabled and related laws were discussed. Through this, it was confirmed that the current 「Library Act」 does not have sub-regulations of the Enforcement Decree and Enforcement Rules supporting the regulations related to library support for the disabled, and the 「Welfare of Persons with Disabilities Act」 replaces them. In addition, through research on the current status of libraries for the disabled and interviews with field workers in libraries for the disabled, the need for improvement of the legal system related to libraries for the disabled was confirmed. In conclusion, three improvement plans for supporting libraries for the disabled were proposed as follows: First, the definition and duties of libraries for the disabled through the 「Library Act」; second, preparation of regulations on support for library services for the disabled and fulfillment of duties through the 「Enforcement Decree of the Library Act」; third, through the 「Library Act」 and 「Enforcement Decree of the Library Act」, standards for facilities, collections and manpower of libraries for the disabled are presented.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to provide practical instances of implementing picture book reading sessions within school libraries to enhance language proficiency and foster emotional stability among lower-grade multicultural students hailing from foreign backgrounds. The research outlines the design and execution of a picture book reading program tailored for multicultural students, with analysis based on the outcomes of actual classroom implementations. In the course of the study, existing literature pertaining to the use of picture books for enhancing multicultural education and language skills was reviewed. This informed the development of a structured class procedure by extracting core components. Indeed, 43 multicultural students in five classes in the first and second grades of A Elementary School in Gyeonggi-do were given three pilot classes for each class for 20 weeks and a total of 100 picture book reading classes, each with 17 main lessons. This study establishes the positive impact of picture book reading classes on the Korean language comprehension of multicultural students. The results confirm positive improvements in students’ ability to understand Korean, as evidenced by enhanced Korean expression and presentation skills, increased library usage, and a positive shift in classroom attitude. The procedure for reading picture books using school libraries proposed in this study was actually conceived and developed in the course of class operation in the school education field, reflecting the changes brought about by the increase of multicultural students and the need to improve the class environment. Through this practical investigation, important insights have been extracted regarding how picture book reading sessions designed for elementary school students from multicultural backgrounds can enhance the classroom environment and elevate learning outcomes.

Abstract

Public libraries should plan and provide services that satisfy various needs of the local community users. In order to understand library users, it is essential first to grasp the service areas of libraries. The current service areas of public libraries are primarily set based on administrative boundaries of the areas where the libraries are located, which limits the consideration of actual user access patterns to the libraries. In this study, we aim to create service areas that incorporate the transportation and geographical characteristics of the library’s surroundings and reflect the access patterns of library users. Specifically, we utilized street network data from 502 libraries in 7 metropolitan cities to determine the travel distance and time from user locations, considering gradients, to the libraries. Subsequently, we applied the shortest path algorithm to generate service areas within a 30-minute walking or driving range. As a result, we confirmed that there are differences in the service area patterns of libraries depending on topographical factors, and this better reflects the realistic conditions of library access compared to service areas based on straight-line distances. This method of generating service areas contributes to a more accurate understanding of library users’ numbers, characteristics, and needs.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the current status of institutional research data repositories in the field of science and technology and to suggest ways to activate them. The study conducted literature research, case analysis, and interviews with repository managers both domestically and internationally. The study suggested strategies with a focus on establishing repository regulations and policies, improving awareness of research data sharing, and enhancing research data quality management. First, in terms of repository regulations and policy establishment, it was considered necessary to promote the status of the National R&D Information Processing Standards, a regulation related to research data, and clarify repository basis regulations. Second, to enhance awareness of research data sharing, the need for comprehensive research data education and the identification of exemplary cases were suggested. Third, in terms of strengthening research data quality management, the need for preparation for interaction between researchers-persons in charge-committees, standardization work, and long-term preservation was suggested.

Abstract

This study analyzed the research trends of COVID-19 research papers published in medical journals of Korea. Data were collected from 25 MEDLINE journals in ‘Medicine and Pharmacy’ studies and a total of 800 were selected. As a result of the study, authors from domestic affiliations made up 76.96% of the total, and the proportion of authors from foreign institutions decreased without significant change. The authors’ majors were ‘Internal Medicine’ (32.85%), ‘Preventive Medicine/Occupational and Environmental Medicine’ (16.23%), ‘Radiology’ (5.74%), and ‘Pediatrics’ (5.50%), and 435 (54.38%) papers were collaborative research. As for author keywords, ‘COVID19’ (674), ‘SARSCoV2’ (245), ‘Coronavirus’ (81), and ‘Vaccine’ (80) were derived as top keywords. There were six words that appeared throughout the entire period: ‘COVID19,’ ‘SARSCoV2,’ ‘Coronavirus,’ ‘Korea,’ ‘Pandemic,’ and ‘Mortality.’ Co-occurrence network analysis was conducted on MeSH terms and author keywords, and common keywords such as ‘covid-19,’ ‘sars-cov-2,’ and ‘public health’ were derived. In topic modeling, five topics were identified, including ‘Vaccination,’ ‘COVID-19 outbreak status,’ ‘Omicron variant,’ ‘Mental health, control measures,’ and ‘Transmission and control in Korea.’ Through this study, it was possible to identify the research areas and major keywords by year of COVID-19 research papers published during the ‘Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).’

Abstract

The basis of library services is to support users’ efficient access to materials, and to this end high-quality search services using bibliographic data (bibliographic MARC) must be premised. However, in Korea, discussions on search services based on library catalogs are still in the early 2010s, so it is necessary to understand the current status and examine user needs. In this context, this study aims to provide a solution for public library searching services to become an efficient search tool based on user needs. For this purpose, first, this study analyzed cataloging services of 49 public libraries in Busan by focusing on ‘data search method’ and ‘method of providing information’, second, identified user needs by conducting a survey of 322 users visiting public libraries, and finally, proposed improvement directions based on best practices.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to present a construction model of Koryoin Larchiveum that considers the space and function of larchiveum, centering on the Koryoin Historical and Cultural Center. To this end, a survey was conducted targeting librarians, archivists, and curators, and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was conducted to find out the average difference between space and work requirements by institution. In addition, based on the survey, in-depth interviews were conducted with secondary experts (directors, representatives, Koryoin experts, etc.) on spatial components. As a result, first, spatial and functional elements set mainly for functions necessary for Koryoin Larchiveum were derived. Spatial elements include storage, reading rooms, and resting areas for libraries, archives storage rooms and exhibition rooms for archives, and storage and exhibition rooms for cultural centers. Functions (work) were represented by 4 elements: library 3, archives 5, and cultural center. Second, after reviewing the interview, the Koryoin Larchiveum construction model was modified and supplemented. As for the spatial composition, the installation space, work contents, and manpower in charge were presented from the first basement floor to the third floor above the ground.

Abstract

The Study is to investigate information resources recognition of collection development policy that is a key element of Gwangju representative library. 68 Librarians, 98 library users and 20 libraries responded the questions of information resources. The fields of the questions are media, subjects and levels of information resources. The results of the research are as follows. First, the correlation coefficients between librarian group’s preference and need is lower than that of the user group. Second, information resources for the knowledge-disadvantaged has low preference and need but the actual usage rate was high. Third, Librarians need to transfer historical paper and books, historical objects, technical reports and journal articles to the representative library. Fourth, information resources about philosophy have middle preference, low need and the resources have low need for transfer to representative library. Fifth, local historical resources and administrative policy resources has low usage rate high need for transfer to representative library. Sixth, the level of public library in Gwangju is 1.837 and the expectative level of Gwangju representative library is 3.325.

Abstract

The study is a preliminary study to conceptualize memes as information resources for literacy education in information environment changed with digital revolution. The study is to explain the context and reality of memes in order to promote the utilization of memes as information resources. The research questions are as follows: First, what topics are ‘memes’ studied with? Second, what things are captured and studied as ‘memes’? The study conducted frequency and co-occurrence network analysis on 145 domestic studies and contents analysis on 73 domestic studies. The results are as follows: First, memes were mainly studied in the fields of ‘humanities’, ‘social sciences’, ‘interdiciplinary studies’, and ‘arts and kinesiology’. Studies based on Dawkins’ concept of memes (around 2012), studies on introducing the concept of memes to explain the spread of Korean Wave content (around 2015), and independent studies of memes as a major research topic in cultural sociology (around 2019) were performed. Second, memes are linguistic. Language memes (L-memes) are 102 (37%), language-visual memes (LV-memes) are 23 (8%), language-visual-musical memes (LVM-memes) are 21 (8%). Keyword ‘language meme’ ranked high in frequency, degree centrality and betweenness centrality of co-occurrence network. In other words, memes are expanding as a unique information phenomenon of cultural sociology based on linguistic characteristics. It is necessary to conceptualize meme literacy in terms of information literacy.

Abstract

This study sought implications for further revitalizing student-centered classes by measuring and analyzing the effects of the operation of major courses applying blended learning for library and information sicence (LIS) students on learning immersion, result achievement, and learning satisfaction. The results are as follows: First, as a result of comparative analysis between the pre and post scores of learning immersion, result achievement, and academic satisfaction after operating the blended learning class, the average score of the post-survey was high. Second, among the factors of learning immersion, significant results were found in academic reasons, academic concentration, interest, and control. In particular, the effect of academic concentration and control was high. Third, among the factors of outcome achievement, significant results were found in achievement motivation, satisfaction, relationship utilization ability, and class attitude. The effect of satisfaction and relationship utilization ability was particularly high. Fourth, both general satisfaction and learning-related satisfaction were very effective in academic satisfaction factors. In sum, it was found that the operation of major courses applying blended learning was effective for LIS students.

Abstract

The Beopmaru, Supreme Court Library of Korea, the national library of the judiciary, is the only one that can help reduce the justice gap and increase access to justice by allowing the general public and legal experts to read and circulate. Accordingly, this study identified user satisfaction with the Beopmaru public service through surveys and interviews and derived ways to improve the service. User satisfaction was in the following order out of 5 points: response of librarian 4.62 points, facility management 4.48 points, and cultural programs such as events and lectures 4.33 points. Satisfaction with collection composition was the lowest at 3.97 points. This appears to be because collection composition is where legal expertise has the greatest impact on satisfaction. As satisfaction with the collection composition was the lowest, collection expansion was the highest at 44%(114 people) as a service that Beopmaru needs to strengthen in the future, and a balanced collection of books according to the user base is needed in the future. Based on this, improvement measures were proposed to include dualizing the Beopmaru reading space and services for the general public and legal experts, strengthening its identity as a legal library, improving the system, and strengthening publicity and response of librarian. If the Beopmaru public service is successfully established through continuous research in the library and information community, it will be possible to improve the service quality of the law library industry as a whole, including law libraries, and increase user satisfaction.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to propose criteria for selecting picture books as various reading education materials for middle school students and to check whether it can be applied to book selection. First, identified the educational value of picture books as reading materials and the criteria for selecting picture books by academic field through previous studies. After integrating the commonalities of various picture book selection criteria presented in previous studies by categorizing them into illustrations, text, and other categories. And it devised selection criteria that can be applied after selecting middle school students as readers. Based on the unified picture book selection criteria, a survey was conducted to ask in-service librarians about the main criteria to consider when selecting picture books for middle school students, and intensive interviews were conducted with experts who have experience in picture book education. As a result, the picture book selection criteria from previous studies were revised and supplemented with two criteria related to text, four criteria related to pictures, and five other criteria, and presented as picture book selection criteria for middle school students. To verify the practicality of the picture book selection criteria, it checked the applicability of each category of criteria to picture books recommended by the Children’s Book Research Society (ages 13 and older). Out of 22 picture books for middle school students, 15 books could be applied to all categories of the selection criteria, showing significant practicality.

Abstract

This study aimed to construct a career exploration reading program based on the Fourth Industrial Revolution and measure its effects on students’ career consciousness development. The study involved 12 participants in the experimental group and 12 participants in the control group, who underwent pre-test and post-test evaluations. After conducting 12 sessions of the career exploration reading program with the experimental group, a career development assessment was administered. The experimental group showed statistically significant effects in all nine sub-domains of career development compared to the control group. Additionally, the experimental group reported increased satisfaction, positive perception, and a sense of accomplishment in career exploration activities, leading to a positive impact on the formation of future career concepts.
