Abstract

Purpose - This paper tests the effect of the structure of manufacturing and marketing subsidiary network on FX exposure of Korean MNEs. Research design, data, methodology – This study utilizes a sample of 309 Korean MNEs constructed from database offered by KOTRA and KIS-VALUE. Results - As operational flexibility arising from having operations in multiple locations provides an option for firms to tackle FX exposure, greater breadth of manufacturing subsidiary network reduces FX exposure, and greater depth increases FX exposure. However, both the breadth and depth of marketing subsidiary network decrease FX exposure due to the firm’s higher level of market presence and knowledge to devise an appropriate marketing strategy that can buffer adverse exchange rate movement. Such an effect is intensified when MNE’s have FX exposure pass-through ability stemming from differentiated good. Conclusions – Empirical findings suggest that types and structure of Korean MNEs’ foreign subsidiary network are closely related to the level of FX exposure they are experiencing. Also, they can utilize marketing subsidiary network more efficiently when having a higher R&D intensity.

Abstract

Many scholars have shown interest in utilization of external knowledge as an element essential for productivity and sustainable growth for a company. However, the relationship between the use of external knowledge and innovation, though important, has not been researched sufficiently. In particular, studies are scant on the use of external knowledge by Korean manufacturers. Additionally, although many scholars argue that empirical knowledge and information acquired in overseas markets enhance corporate competitiveness and financial performance, there is little research on internationalization as the acquisition of external knowledge for technological innovation. Therefore, in order to fill this research gap, this paper will look at the domestic and international strategies of utilization of external knowledge, using data from 500 manufacturing firms in Korea, and will analyze the effect of those strategies on radical innovation. In conclusion, this paper proved that the use of various external resources has a positive impact on radical innovation and that internationalization had a positive impact on first-to-market innovation.

Abstract

Purpose - The rapid economic growth can promote the education development. Conversely, the economic growth also can benefit form a good education input. However, the operating mechanism between education input and economic growth is still a proposition worth being studied. Therefore, this paper will set China as an example to analyze the dynamic relationship between education input and economic growth. Research design, data, and methodology - The annual time series from 1990 to 2017 will be employed to conduct an empirical analysis under the vector autoregression model. The education input is treated as an factor that impacts the economic growth such as the labor input and capital input. Meanwhile, the education input will be added to the Cobb-Douglas production function to form a new one so as to explore the dynamic relationship between education input and economic growth. Results - According to the results of empirical analysis, it can be found that the education input has an increasingly positive effect on economic growth. Simultaneously, the economic growth has a positive effect on education input, but this kind of effect is not steady. Of course, the labor input and the capital input also can promote the economic growth in some degree. Conclusions - The education input is one of most important inputs for a country. This paper provides some empirical suggestions on the dynamic relationship between education input and economic growth in respect of China. This paper suggests that the China’s government should put more emphasis on the education input so to make the economy develop well.

Abstract

Purpose – This paper aims to analyze the determinants of licensing behaviors of manufacturing firms empirically in non-advanced exporting countries. Research design and methodology – We try to approach licensing behavior from the perspective of innovation strategy and open innovation, and deal with two activities composing licensing, i.e. licensing-in and licensing-out using the result of Korean Innovation Survey Results – Firstly, Organizational characteristic factors, particularly the size and size related factors influence the firm behavior of licensing-out, but not in case of licensing-in. Secondly, innovation strategy influences the firm behavior of licensing-in, but not in case of licensing-out. Lastly, the determinants of licensing-in and that of licensing-out are different. Conclusions – In general, firms doing licensing–out have many complementary assets and orientation for global markets. Meanwhile, firms doing licensing-in are innovative firms utilizing patent as an appropriation mechanism. Licensing–out have relevance with product market-related factors and licensing-in have more relevance with technology market-related factors
