Rethinking Public Library Director's Duties

이 글은 공공도서관 현장이라고 하는 직업 세계를 매개로 하는 일상적 업무 속에서 공공도서관의 최고관리자인 도서관장과 실질적으로 공공도서관 일선에서 실무를 담당하고 있는 평사서들과의 역할에 대한 기대와 의식, 그리고 업무에서의 인식의 차이를 관찰하고 분석하였다. 이를 위하여 질적 분석 방법을 사용하여 공공도서관의 평사서들의 일상적 의식세계에 나타나는 공공도서관장의 자질과 역할에 대한 기대를 밝혀내고, 실제로 공공도서관 운영을 책임지고 있는 도서관장의 직업세계를 일상사적 관점으로 조사하여 비교하고 분석하였다.

Abstract

There are speculations toward public libraries in Korea including the destructive crisis in public libraries. As leaders in these organizations, the directors of public libraries need to be interested in the subject of leadership. Leadership is a major component of management of an organization in transition. The subject once was a sub-field prospered especially in 1970's and 1980's. Since then the perceptions of researchers and practitioners have changed due to new technologies. Recent literature in the field illustrates wide variety of concerns and issues of public library management. This paper attempts to highlight such issues and perceptions of the real world of libraries, portrayed through a qualitative analysis.
