대학생(N=126)을 피검사자로 하여 합리적 행동검사'(Rationl Behavior Inventory: RBI, Shorkey & Whitman, 1977)로 측정한 비합리성 (irrationality)과 '표준화 성격진단검사' (이상오, 변창진, 진위교, 1987)로 측정한 정신병리적 경향 (pathological tendency)간의 관계를 조사했다. 구체적으로, 1)RBI는 신뢰할만한 검사인가? 2)비합리적 사고와 정신병리적 경향간에 유의미한 상관이 있는가? 3)정신병리적 경향에 기여하고 있는 특정 비합리적 사고 요인은 무엇인가? 에 대하여 살폈다. Cronbach 의 alpha로 계산된 RBI의 신뢰도 계수는 .657로 나타나, 이 검사가 한국 대학생의 비합리적 사고 수준을 측정하는데 대체로 적절한 신뢰성이 있는 검사로 확인되었다. RBI의 비합리성 총점과 임상척도 총점 간에 r=.43(p<.0001)의 상관이 나타나, 비합리적 사고와 정신병리적 징후 간에 관계가 있다는 인지적 행동가설을 지지했다. 한국 대학생에게 있어서 정신병리적 징후(우울중, 불안증, 편집증, 자폐증, 신경증)와 관련있는 비합리적 사고는: 1.상황의 재앙시 경향, 2. 타성과 회피, 3. 자신 및 타자 비하, 4. 불운 가능성에 대한 걱정 근심, 5. 자기감정 통제불능등 다섯가지로 나타났다. RBI의 변별 타당도에 대하여 논의되었고, 비합리적 사고에 대한 인지적 프로그램 개발 가능성이 제안되었다.
The relationship between the irrationality measured by the Rational Behavior Inventory (RBI: Shorkey & Whitman, 1977) and the pathological tendency measured by the Standard Personality Test (Lee, Byun & Jin, 1987) was investigated. The following questions were asked. 1) Is the RBI a reliable test for Korean college students? 2) Is there a significant correlation between irrational thinking and pathological tendency? 3) What sort of the specific irrational thinkings are contributing to pathological tendency? The reliability of RBI calculated by Chronbach zs alpha was . 657, which indicates that this instrument has moderate reliability to measure irrationality of the Korean college students. The correlation between the total irrationality score of RBI and the total pathological tendency score was r=. 43 (p<. 0001), which supports the cognitive-behavioral hypothesis. The specific irrational thinkings contributing to pathological tendency were: 1. catastrophizing, 2. inertia and avoidance, 3. negative evaluation of self and others, 4. projected misfortunes, and 5. subjective assessment of self cotrol of emotions. Discriminant validity of RBI was discussed. Possible cognitive programs to help change irrational thinking were also suggested.
