상담심리학의 최근 경향을 고찰하기 위해서 본 논문에서는 다옴과 같은 몇가지의 주제를 다룬다: (1) 상담심리학의 성격 정의, (2) 상담심리학의 적용분야, (3) 상담방법, (4) 상담과정-성과 연구, (5) 심리학 타분야와의 관계. 첫째주제에서는 상담심리학이 임상심리학과 중복부분이 많다는 점에서 상담심리학의 정체성문제를 논의하고, 둘째주제에서는 상담심리학의 전통적인 적용분야인 진로/직업상담과 심리상담의 최근동향 그리고 새로 부각되는 적용분야들을 논의한다. 세째주제에서는 상담방법에 대한 최근의 이론수렴 경향을 논의하고 단기상담방법을 소개한다. 네번째주제에서는상담과정-성과 연구에서 최근 주목받는 주제들과 새로운 연구방법의 동향을 소개한다. 마지막으로 심리학 타분야와의 관계는 주로 사회심리학의 지식이 상담심리학에서 활용되어진 부분들을 상술한다.
Five topics were discussed to describe the contemporary trends of counseling psychology : (1) definitions of counseling psychology, (2) the fields to which counseling psychology is applied, (3) counseling methods, (4) research linking counseling process and outcome, and (5) related fields. The first topic discusses the identity issues in counseling psychology related to clinical psychology, which is the nearest field in psyetiology. The second topic disusses the two major traditions in counseling psychology: career/vocational counseling and psychological counseling. The third topic discusses the research linking counseling process and outcome. New research methods are also introduced. The final topic discusses how social psychology has influenced the counseling psychology.
