오늘날 한국 상담이 당면한 가장 중요한 문제중의 하나는 상담의 전문성 문제라고 할 수 있다. 이전에 비해서 상담이 나름대로 대중화 보편화 되고 어느 정도 양적인 팽창을 가져왔지만 상담의 전문성과 질적인 발전은 이러한 양적 팽창을 따르지 못하고 있는 실정이다. 양적인 측면에 비해 상담의 전문성 문제는 소홀히 다루어지고 있다. 따라서 일반 대중의 상담에 대한 인식이 왜곡되고 상담자들도 전문가로서의 자질을 갖추는 데 등한히 하는 경향을 보이고 있다. 상담의 전문성은 상담교육을 통해서 이루어지는 것이다. 그러나 우리 나라의 상담교육 과정을 보면 체계적이지 못하고 일정한 자격기준 없이 산발적으로 실시되고 있다. 이러한 현실이 상담의 전문성 확립을 더 어렵게 하고 있다. 따라서 체계적인 상담자 교육과 훈련방법이 요구된다. 상담교육의 목표와 방법으로서 과학자 - 실천가 모형과 인지기술 방법을 활용해 상담교육을 좀 더 체계화하고 실습교육을 강화할 것이 요구된다.
One of the most serious issues in Korean counseling today is professionalization. Since counseling is a professional service, the counselor should be a professional. However, the counselor education and training processes range from college degree programs to short term training for paraprofessionals without any unified and accredited standards. Therefore, the quality of counselors is a serious problem today. Most of the counseling related departments offer very limited number of counseling courses for undergraduates, while graduate programs offer more courses. However, the training within counselor education programs varies from school to school. The scientist-practitioner model and cognitive-skills model have been studied as a possible counselor training and supervision model for the Korean universities.
