본 연구는 타인을 지각할 때 범주주도적인 처리가 공감에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 알아 보고자 하였다. 타인의 특성을 역할이나 범주의 특성으로 지각하는 범주주도적인 처리를 하게 되면 개인의 실체를 보지 못하게 되어 공감이 저해될 수 있다. 이 가정을 검증하기 위해 피험자들을 세 집단으로 나누어 각각 범주화, 재범주화 및 탈범주화 처치를 가하였다. 범주화 조건은 성범주를 특출하게 하여 남여 성범주에 자신의 정체를 동일시 하도록 함으로써 타인을 지각할 때 내외 집단으로 구분해서 타인을 지각하도록 만든 조건이다. 반면 재범주화 조건은 남여 범주를 하나의 단일 집단으로 묶어 범주경계를 재설정한 것이며, 탈범주화 조건은 범주경계를 해체하여 탈범주화한 것으로서 이 재범주화와 탈범주화 조건은 타인을 개인으로 지각하도록 만든 것이다. 각 세 조건에서 상대방의 생각과 특성을 얼마나 정확하게 추론하는가를 나타내는 지표인 공감적 정확성을 측정한 결과 범주화 조건에서는 상대방을 범주주도적으로 처리하여 개인의 개별적 정보를 무시함으로써 다른 두 조건에 비하여 공감적 정확성이 떨어진다는 결과가 얻어졌다.
The present study investigated the hypothesis that the category-based process will reduce the accuracy in the perception of empathy for the target person because the target's individualistic information is not perceived as salient. Six undergraduate students (3 males and 3 females) participated at once in this experiment and were randomly assigned into one of the three groups in which their identities were differently manipulated. In the gender-based identity condition, the categorization condition, participants' gender identity was treated to be salient. It was reasoned that subjects will perceive others by means of differentiation in-group from out-group on the basis gender. In the group-based identity condition, the recategorization condition, subjects were instructed to identity themselves as members belonging to the same group. Finally in the individual-based identity condition, the decategorization condition, subjects were instructed to identify themselves in terms of their own nicknames. Thus both gender and group identities were eliminated. Conforming the predictions, the results indicated that subjects in the gender-based identity condition showed lower accuracy in the perception empathy as compared to the accuracy obtained in the other two conditions.
