미국 학교도서관이 학업성취에 미치는 효과 연구에 대한 고찰
A Study on the Impact of School Library Programs on Student Achievement in the USA

초록
본 연구는 미국의 학교도서관 프로그램이 학생들의 학업성취에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 중 콜로라도 연구 I(1993), II(2000), 텍사스 연구(2001), 미주리 연구(2003), 일리노이 연구(2005)를 분석하였다. 다섯 개 연구의 조사방법과 연구내용을 중점적으로 고찰하였다. 다섯 연구는 성적에 영향을 미치는 학교도서관, 학교, 그리고 지역사회 변수를 도출하기 위하여 공통적으로 상관관계분석, 요인분석, 다중회귀분석을 사용하였다. 모든 연구의 일관된 결론은 도서관 발전수준-직원, 장서, 예산-이 높을수록, 사서교사의 전문적 활동이 활발할수록, 그리고 정보기술의 사용이 활성화되어 있을수록 학생들의 성적이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 미국 아동들의 리터러시 향상과 학교도서관 독서 프로그램과 관련하여 NCLB법에 관해서도 검토하였다.

Abstract
This paper analyzed the impact of school library programs on student achievement in the United States focusing on the following five studies: the Colorado Study I(1993), II(2000), the Texas Study(2001), the Missouri Study(2003), and the Illinois Study(2005). All five studies, which used correlation analysis, factor analysis, and multiple regression showed a positive and statistically significant relationship between school library programs and student achievement: That is when school libraries have higher levels of professional and total staffing, larger collections of print and electronic resources, and more funding, students tend to earn higher scores on state reading tests. This paper also investigated the NCLB Act in relation to enhancing children's literacy and school library reading programs.
