본 연구는 현직 중등교사 184명(교직경력 10년 이상자)을 대상으로 그들의 삶의 의미수준 및 죽음불안 정도를 살펴보고, 이 두 변인 간의 관계를 살펴보았다. 측정도구는 Purpose in Life(PiL) Test와 The Collett-Lester Fear of Death and Dying Scale(FDDS) Test이다. PiL Test에서는 삶의 의미수준을 上, 中, 下로 구분하게 되고, FDDS Test는 대상자가 느끼는 죽음 불안 및 그 하위요인으로서 DS(자신의 죽음에 대한 불안), DO(타인의 죽음에 대한 불안), DyS(자신이 죽어 가는 존재라는 것에 대한 불안), DyO(타인이 죽어 가는 존재라는 것에 대한 불안)를 측정하게 된다. 결과는 피험자 중 70%가 中이하의 삶의 의미수준을 나타내고 있었고, 이 중에서 특히 17%는 삶의 의미수준 下인 실존적 공허를 경험하고 있음이 밝혀졌다. 또한 죽음에 대하여도 中이상의 불안을 보이고 있었다. 특히 죽음불안에 있어 연령변인은 매우 주목할만한 결과를 나타내고 있었는데, '30대' 연령집단이 가장 높은 죽음 불안을 보였고, 50대 연령집단이 가장 낮은 죽음불안을 나타냈다. 삶의 의미수준과 죽음불안 간의 관계에서는 통계적으로 매우 의미있는(P<.0001) 부적 상관관계를 보이고 있었다. 즉 삶의 의미수준이 높을수록 죽음불안은 낮아짐을 보여주었다.
This study is to investigate the relationship between Purpose in Life and Death Anxiety. The subjects of this study are 184 junior high school and hight school teacher who have worked for more than 10 years. The measurement tools are Purpose in Life(PiL) test and Collett-Leaster's Fear of Death and Dying Scale(FDDS). The subscales of FDDS are composed of four subscales; fear of death of self, fear of death of other, fear of dying of self, and fear of dying of another. The results of this study are as follows: 1. The mean and the range of PiL are 75.94(SD=±10.56) and 20 - 100 respectively, and the mean and the range of FDDS are 93.35(SD=±11.68) and 36 - 144. 2. 17 percent of subjects responded that they were experiencing existential vacuum which was indicated on the lowest points on Purpose in Life. 3. In particular, subjects' age is the most significant variable in predicting the level of fear of death: the group of subjects in their thirties showed the highest level of fear of death, whereas the subjects in their fifties showed the lowest level of fear of death. 4. There was a significant negative correlation between the Purpose in Life and Death Anxiety(r=-0,368, p<,001); the higher the level of Purpose in Life, the lower the level of fear of death.
