Abstract

The history of modern libraries in Korea is less than 150 years. Nevertheless, there are various issues about when the word library appeared, how it was transformed, and the name and overall appearance of the library opened by the Busanpo branch of the Nihon Kodo-kai during the enlightenment period. Therefore, this study analyzed and argued many issues. As a result, it was found that the word library appeared in poetry collections, tombstones, and diaries from the early Joseon dynasty. Although it was widely held that the library was first introduced by Yu Gil-jun’s 「Seoyugyeonmun, 1895」, it appeared in Lee Hun-young’s 「Iisajipryak」 and was also introduced in 「Hanseongsunbo, 1884」. And the first name given to the facility was Kodo library, which was opened by the Busanpo branch on October 10, 1901. Book club, reading club(library), Busan(Busan district) library, Kodo bookstore, Kodo-kai library, etc. which are described in many documents are all errors. The location of the library was a temporary house on a leased site in Seosanhajeong of Yongdusan mountain. And it is presumed that it has secured about one room and 1,000 Japanese and Western books, and provided fee-based services to Japanese residents. Although the Kodo library is not the first public library established by a Korean, it is undeniable that it was the first public library to exist in Korea. Therefore, when defining the character of the Kodo library, it is necessary to have a coolness and discernment beyond national emotions, historical conflicts, and ideological frames.

Abstract

This study was to prepare a development plan for nationwide authority control system based on national authority sharing system of NLK through the survey targeting on libraries which do not participate in the system. Six plans were suggested to establish a nationwide authority control system based on this survey. First, an authority data construction module and a module linked to the national authority sharing system should be developed. Second, describing external identifiers such as ISNI to the national authority sharing system is to provides reliability of data and to utilizes to build linked data. Third, it is necessary to prepare strategies for promoting the national authority sharing system and diversifying services. Fourth, both authority establishment and non-establishment show difficulties and diversity in the selection and description of authorized access point, so it is necessary to prepare rules related to authorized access points. Fifth, since the data described in authority records is not enough, it is necessary to improve and upgrade authority records by using bibliographic records. Sixth, it is necessary to educate librarians about the necessity and function of authority control. As such, this study is meaningful in that it investigated the current status and requirements of libraries that do not participate in the nationwide authority system and sought ways to establish a nationwide cooperative authority control system.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the awareness and experiences of domestic researchers regarding data publishing, which has been recognized as a new channel of data sharing as scholarly communication evolves in the open science environment. A survey is conducted among researchers from five government-funded research institutes in the field of science and technology and members of the GeoAI Data Society to confirm the awareness of data publishing. As a result of the study, domestic researchers recognized providing explanations for data, stable access to data, citation, and quality assurance through peer review as the advantages of data journals. On the contrary, a low level of recognition for data paper as one of the research outputs was presented. With regard to the properties of data publication, the respondents answered that the data description, metadata description, and permanent identifiers are highly related, however, their recognition of the relation between the properties of data publication and the data submission to a repository and data peer review was relatively low. Finally, to expand the data publication, the need for the development of an editorial system that supports data paper peer review and cross-linking to a data repository as well as the development of a repository that supports data citation was identified. This study on the domestic researchers’ experience and awareness of data publishing can provide insights for the implementation of data publishing services and infrastructure in the future.

Abstract

This study increases awareness of the survey and demand for libraries in correctional facilities, which have not received much attention so far, and is necessary for improving the operation of existing research and libraries in Korea, which is conducting a current status survey of most correctional facility libraries. The contents of the service operation of the external correctional facility library were explored and analyzed. As a result of the analysis, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany, where correctional facility libraries are relatively well operated, are practically operating social rehabilitation programs while reducing recidivism of inmates, and library associations or local governments in each country are promoting the vitalization of correctional facility libraries. It helps and organizes committees or organizations involving related experts to discuss policy support, issue checks, research, report publication, drafting and revising guide guidelines, cooperation between libraries, and reflect them in actual operation. In addition, it maintains steady support and interest through public-private cooperation, and makes good use of the linkage system with local public libraries. As a result, it contributes to reducing the recidivism of prisoners. Through this study, the following three areas were suggested for the administrative improvement direction for correctional facility library services. First, the production and distribution of guidelines or guidebooks for correctional facility libraries, second, the establishment of a specialized correctional facility library organization within the correctional headquarters or library association, and third, the strengthening of activities and the operation of law libraries in correctional facilities.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to classify the quality attributes of service quality for the elderly in public libraries, derive satisfaction coefficients and dissatisfaction coefficients, and present the priority improvement of service quality. To this end, a survey was organized with 22 questions from LibQUAL+ for elderly users who use library in uiseong-gun, gyeongsangbuk-do. Quality factors for service were classified into three areas of LibQUAL+ based on the kano model, and the satisfaction index and dissatisfaction index felt by users for each service quality were calculated through timko’s customer satisfaction coefficient. Based on this, a Potential Customer Satisfaction Improvement index (PCSI index) was obtained to determine how much user satisfaction can be improved when actual requirements are met. As a result of classification of quality attributes of service quality, it was classified into 9 attractive quality, 7 one-dimensional quality, 1 indifference quality, and 5 must-be quality. In the improvement ranking for service, the first place was ‘making electronic resources accessible from my home or office’, the second place was ‘print and/or electronic journal collections I require for my work’ and the third place was ‘a library web site enabling me to locate information on my’. It is expected that the study results can be used to present quality factors that should be managed and improved first when providing services for the elderly.

Abstract

This study aims to propose a scaffolding strategy that can be applied to the information search process by using Kuhlthau's ISP model, which presented a design and implementation strategy for the mediation role in the learning process. To this end, the relevant literature was reviewed to categorize scaffolding strategies, and impressions were collected from the students surveys after providing 150 middle school students in the Daejeon area with the project class to which the scaffolding strategy based on the ISP model was applied. The collected data were processed into a form suitable for analysis through data preprocessing for word frequencies to be extracted, and topic analysis was performed using STM (Structural Topic Modeling). First, after determining the optimal number of topics and extracting topics for each stage of the ISP model, the extracted topics were classified into three types: cognitive domain-macro perspective, cognitive domain-micro perspective, and emotional domain perspective. In this process, we focused on cognitive verbs and emotional verbs among words extracted through text mining, and presented a scaffolding strategy model related to each topic by reviewing representative document cases. Based on the results of this study, if an appropriate scaffolding strategy is provided at the ISP model stage, a positive effect on learners' self-directed task solving can be expected.

Abstract

This study is a literature study that analyzed the research data curation models using activity theory as a theoretical framework. Based on the factors of the activity used in the activity theory, this study analyzed various research data curation models, as well as issues that needed discussion in the library field in carrying out research data curation activities. And based on this, a new research data curation conceptual model was proposed. This study analyzed how the five previously proposed digital curation lifecycle models are configured, and analyzed the actions presented sporadically in each model. A new research data curation conceptual model was proposed by analyzing factors, extracting common factors and integrating them into a new model. In addition, six issues to be considered in carrying out research data curation activities in libraries and repositories were analyzed and discussed. The research data curation conceptual model proposed in this study consists of a total of 10 steps, and it contains practical issues and contradictions to consider at each stage of activity.

Abstract

This research attempts to identify how members of an online community collaboratively engaged with particular social information behaviors and accomplished a defined collective action. While responding to the Sewol Ferry tragedy, MissyUSA members quickly communicated and mobilized a collective action, a full-page ad campaign in The New York Times. As a follow up study, this secondary analysis quantitatively analyzes the primary data from a previous study to explore potential relationships or underlying factors among the various identified information behaviors. In this study, nineteen of the previously identified information behaviors were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis, yielding a total of eight factors. The two major factors of shared representation/collective identification and mobilizing resources verified the findings of the previous study and are in line with the findings typical of political science. The three factors of collaborative decision-making, reaction to tension, and brainstorming were factors that maximized communication and mobilization online, without any face-to-face communication or physical organization. Three emergent factors of outburst of dissent, boycott, and planning explained how members used negative emotions of anger, referential information for boycott, and incubated next collective actions. Through exploratory factor analysis, this study verifies and expands on the findings of the previous study by identifying several emergent factors that relate to the collaborative information behaviors of an online community engaged in a collective action.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate whether library public forums, which are conducted as a part of the library’s information services, affect users’ perception of libraries. We analyzed the variations in users’ perception of libraries based on their participation in public forums held by the public libraries. Data was collected through a survey of users from the Seongbuk Public Libraries in Seoul, which hold public forums. It was discovered that users’ perception of public libraries varied depending on whether they had attended the library’s public forums or not. The study revealed that users who participated in library public forums had a better understanding of the public libraries compared to those who did not. Specifically, users who participated in public forums exhibited a deeper comprehension of the library’s roles, higher trust in the library, and a greater willingness to visit the library. In addition, we found that users acknowledged the importance of public forums in libraries and expressed a high level of interest and willingness to participate in them. Based on these findings, we discussed the implications of library public forums on users’ perception of libraries and highlighted the need for information services that are based on public forums.
