태도변화를 일으키는데 가장 중요한 것은 상담자와 내담자 사이에 형성되는 관계체험이다. 신뢰로운 관계에 대한 체험은 어느 상담접근에서든 중요한 것으로 간주된다. 그런데 우리나라 사람들을 상담할 때, 상담자-내담자 관계는 그동안 우리가 알고 있는 것보다 훨씬 많은 기능을 한다. 다차원적 문화 분류에 따르면 우리나라는 서양과 많은 차이를 보이면서 가족주의, 권위주의, 인정주의와 같은 문화를 형성했다. 우리나라는 유교의 영향으로 아버지와 아들 즉, 부모와 자녀의 관계를 근간으로 하는 문화를 발전시켰는데, 이러한 맥락에서 상담자-내담자 관계도 서양에서의 그 관계보다 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 따라서 우리나라 사람을 상담할 때 상담자가 정서적 지지뿐만 아니라, 양육적 기능, 그리고 부모-자녀 관계의 복원을 도와주는 역할을 하면 상담효과를 더 높일 수 있다고 본다. 특히, 상담자-내담자 관계에 기초해 부모-자녀간의 유대를 발견하도록 하는 것은 내담자에게 자존감과 자신감을 갖게 해주는 것으로 한국적 상담접근인 현실역동상담에서 상담자의 주요 역할로 간주된다.
The experience of relationship between counselor and client is one of the most important factors in attitude change. It is considered as a major factor in any counseling approaches. However, it is more important in Korea than in Western counties. Following the multi-dimensional perspective, Korean culture is quite different from Western culture and develops its unique characteristic: familism, authoritarianism, humanism. Since there is comparison between the relationship of counselor-client and the relationship of parent-child in Korea, counselor might guide a client and facilitate the innate value of his parent as well as providing emotional support for counseling effect. Above all, facilitating the value of parent is quite important so that a client might to get self-esteem and self-confidence, and it is necessary for a Korean because the concept of filial piety between father-son(parent-child) is the basis of Korean culture.
