본 연구는 해마다 급증하고 있는 해외 거주 후 귀국한 학생들의 학교생활적응 특성을 파악함으로써 이들의 적응을 위한 효율적인 상담 및 생활지도를 할 수 있는 방안을 모색하고자 한다. 이를 위해 경기도 부천시의 10개 중학교에서 서구권 국가에서 거주 1년 이상의 경험을 한 14명을 대상으로 반구조화된 질문을 통한 심층면접을 실시하였다. 녹음된 면접을 축어록으로 풀어쓴 자료를 주요개념과 범주로 유목화하는 방법을 통해 공통적인 경험을 추출해내었다. 분석결과는 3개의 영역과 9개의 주제로 나왔다. 이는 다음과 같다. 영역 1. 친구: 주제 1. 적응에 도움을 주는 한 명 이상의 친구가 있었다; 주제 2. 친구와의 공감대를 위해서는 문화적인 이해에 대한 도움이 필요하다; 주제 3. 자신의 마음을 털어놓을 진솔한 친구를 원했다. 영역 2. 학업: 주제 4. 외국과의 학력 수준차이를 경험하고 있다; 주제 5. 시험 (중간고사, 기말고사)에 대한 스트레스를 심하게 받고 있다; 주제 6. 흥미로운 수업을 경험하고 싶다. 영역 3. 교사: 주제 7. 다른 학생들과 동등하되 드러나지 않는 나름대로의 관심과 배려를 원한다; 주제 8. 친절하고 알기 쉽게 설명해주는 친밀하고 다정한 교사를 원한다; 주제 9. 체벌과 수직적인 지시관계의 권위적인 교사의 태도를 혐오한다. 본 연구의 결과를 바탕으로 해외 거주 후 귀국한 청소년들의 적응에 도움을 줄 수 있는 다양한 방안을 논의하였다.
The purpose of this study is to examine the common adaptational characteristics of middle school students who returned from the Western countries. Based on the findings, the researchers seek to provide appropriate guidance and counseling programs for the students who had similar experience. The three domains of friends, academic life and teachers among 14 students were identified through intensive qualitative research methods. Results suggest that the students (1) had at least more than one friends in the process of adaptation in both countries, abroad and Korea; (2) expressed that they need help in understanding cultures in order to make friends; (3) wanted friends who are genuine and sincere; (4) experienced academic gap between what they have learned abroad and in Korea; (5) expressed that they are pressured by midterm and final examination; (6) wanted interesting and motivating academic activities (7) wished that teachers treat them equally as they would treat other students, yet show care and interest; (8) hoped that teachers are kind, warm and intimate; (9) were disgusted by teachers who are violent, authoritative and directive. Several suggestions are presented to support and help the growing number of returning students who had experience living abroad.
