In the present study, we investigated the relationships of the client's self-concealment, the session evaluation and the working alliance. Also, we examined the difference of the counselor-client's verbal interaction according to the level of the client's self-concealment. We collected data from the 19 real counseling sessions in the beginning phase. Research participants were 7 counselors working at a university counseling center with about 2 years of counseling experiences in average and 19 clients. Clients were requested to fill out the Self-Concealment Scale before the counseling started, and the clients and the counselors filled out separately the Session Evaluation Questionnaire and the Working Alliance Scale right after the session. To compare counselor-client verbal interactional pattern depending on the level of the client's self-concealment, we divided the 19 sessions into the two groups. The high 25% of the self-concealors are classified as the high self-concealors (5 sessions) and the low 25% of the self-concealors as the low self-concealors(5 sessions). The total of the ten sessions were transcribed and the counselors' and the clients' verbal responses were coded using Hill's verbal response categories. The results indicated that the high self-concealers perceived the counseling session less smooth and felt aroused after the session. Counselors were shown to unaffected by the level of client's self-concealment in the session evaluation. There was no significant relationship between clients' self-concealment and working alliance perceived by both clients and counselors. The analysis of the counselor-client's verbal interaction indicated that the client's self-concealment affected the clients' and the counselors' verbal response and their interaction. Implications for counseling practice and future research were suggested.
