A Validation Study of The Youth Psychopathic Traits Inventory: YPI

Abstract

The present study attempted to validate the Korean version of the Youth Psychopathic traits Inventory (YPI) that have originally been developed by Andershed, Kerr, Stattin, & Levander (2002). The YPI has 50 items measuring the three facets of psychopathic traits among the general population of adolescents. It has been reported that the YPI has adequate level of internal consistency (α=.88) and moderately related with the occurrence of various deviant behaviors. For the present study, the original English version YPI was translated into Korean. This Korean version YPI was administered to 749 Korean adolescents (Mean age = 16.71) sampled from Seoul and Pusan metropolitan areas. The major findings were that (1) the reliability was adequate (internal consistency coefficient = .88), (2) three factors (interpersonal, affective, behavioral) were extracted as expected, (3) the cluster analysis identified the psychopathy-like group, and (4) the clustered psychopathy-like group demonstrated the expected pattern of scores on the three criterion measures (Narcissistic Personality Scale, Socialization Scale, M-C social desirability scale). In general, these findings suggest that the Korean version YPI is a reliable and valid measure of psychopathy-like traits among the general population of Korean adolescents and, thus, be utilized in the future studies. However, it was highlighted that the results should be interpreted cautiously because the reliability coefficients of the three subscales of Korean version YPI were unacceptably low. In addition, the ethical problems of using the YPI as a decision-making tool for a youth was discussed.
