Emotion regulation has recently been considered as one of the important psychological factors to affect the mental health and psychopathology. The purpose of this article was to discuss the recent research trends on emotion regulation and it's relationship to psychopathology. First, various definitions on emotion regulation and the major classifications of emotion regulation strategies were examined. Defining emotion regulation as procedures used to decrease unpleasant emotions, we suggested that emotion regulation strategies would be divided into four categories, i.e., cognitive, behavioral, physiological and experiential strategies. Furthermore, the relationships between emotion regulation and psychopathology were discussed from the perspective of adaptability and efficiency of emotion regulation strategies. Finally, some future research tasks for developing psychotherapeutic techniques as well as explaining the development and maintenance of psychopathology in terms of emotion regulation were suggested.
