본 연구에서는 자료수집이 힘든 성매매집결지의 여성들을 대상으로 장기간 반복적인 외상이 주는 정신병리적인 영향에 대하여 실증적 연구를 실시하였다. 연구대상은 성매매 중인 여성 39명과 탈업소한 여성 17명이었다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. PTSD와 Complex PTSD가 모두 있는 것으로 진단된 여성들은 그렇지 않은 경우에 비해 이른 나이에 성매매를 시작했으며, 다양한 외상을 더 많이 경험하였고, 우울과 불안의 정도가 더 심각하였다. 본 연구에서 성매매 여성으로 생활한 기간이 3~5년된 여성들이 그렇지 않은 여성들보다 PTSD, Complex PTSD, 우울, 불안의 정도가 더 높았다. 장기간 반복된 외상은 신체외상 뿐 아니라 자기와 타인, 세상에 대한 기본적인 신념을 깨뜨렸으며, 가장 큰 피해는 자존감 상실로 인한 무력감이었다. 사례연구에서는 PTSD에서 Complex PTSD로의 증상의 변화를 확인하고, Complex PTSD의 전형적인 증상들이 한 개인에게서 어떻게 나타나고 있는지 살펴보았다. 이 연구에서 시사하는 바는 복합 외상피해자들의 경우 외상에 노출된 시간에 따라 치료적 개입이 달라져야 한다는 것이다. 마지막으로 이 연구의 의의와 한계점이 논의되었다.
This study observed the effects of complex trauma and psychopathological effects upon abused prostituted women at brothels. The participants were 39 prostitutes and 17 brothel escapees. Here are the results. Participants having both PTSD and Complex PTSD more likely started earlier brothel lives than those without. They experienced extensive trauma and demoralization. Those who worked between three to five years had the highest severity levels of PTSD, Complex PTSD, and dejection: slightly lower for those who worked six years yet slowly increasing then on. The prolonged trauma’s effects include helplessness, self esteem deficiency and a lack of fundamental social trust. Case studies provided the cause of Complex PTSD and also illustrated the typical symptoms of such disorders. The future research directions and limitations of the study were also discussed.
