Differences in College Students' Separation-Individuation, According to Private Self-Consciousness and Public Self-Consciousness

Abstract

The aim of this study was to identify the natural groupings of 333 college students in Seoul and Kyong-gi province in terms of their levels of private self-consciousness and public self-consciousness and to investigate the characteristics of each cluster on the basis of the students' scores on separation- individuation. The instruments included: (a) Self-Consciousness Scales (Feningstein, Scheier & Buss, 1975), (b) Separation-Individuation test for Adolescence (Levine, Green & Millon, 1986). The results are as follows. First, there was a significant correlation between public self-consciousness and separation- individuation. Second, participants were classified into four clusters: Low Private self-consciousness/ Low Public self-consciousness Group, Low Private self-consciousness/ High Public self-consciousness Group, High Private self-consciousness/ High Public self-consciousness Group, High Private self-consciousness/ Low Public self-consciousness Group. Third, there were significant differences in the nurturance symbiosis, self-centeredness, separation anxiety, as well as engulfment anxiety within each cluster.
