본 연구에서는 북한이탈주민의 정신건강 서비스의 이용 실태와 요구도를 파악하고 전문적 도움을 추구하는데 영향을 주는 요인을 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 서울과 지방에 거주하는 북한이탈주민 169명을 대상으로 설문이 이루어졌고 그 중 155명의 자료가 분석되었다. 설문 내용은 상담 이용경험 및 욕구, 심리적 불편감, 전문적 도움 추구 의도, 상담자에 대한 기대, 사회적 지지망에 대한 조망, 전문적 도움 추구 태도에 대한 것이었다. 정신건강 전문가를 한번 이상 만난 경험이 있는 북한이탈주민은 전체의 28%로 이중 ‘도움이 되었다’고 응답한 비율은 35%였다. 전체의 42%가 정신건강 전문가의 역할을 인지하고 있었으며 15%가 도움을 청하고 싶은 대상으로 정신건강 전문가를 꼽았다. 현재 가장 어려움을 느끼는 문제는 ‘가족에 대한 염려’였으며 가장 상담받기 원하는 문제는 ‘진로 및 직업선택’이었다. 자신을 존중해 주고 진솔한 태도를 지닌 상담자에 대한 기대가 제일 높았다. 심리적 불편감이 전문적 도움 추구 의도에 가장 큰 영향을 미쳤고 그 다음으로 전문가 역할 인지도가 유의미한 영향력을 미쳤다. 전문적 도움 추구 태도에는 사회적지지망에 대한 조망만이 유의미한 영향력을 미쳤다. 이러한 결과들이 북한이탈주민을 대상으로 한 심리 상담에 미치는 시사점에 대해 논의하였다.
The purpose of this study was to examine North Korean defectors' needs for mental health services and to ascertain the predicting factors for their professional help seeking behavior. The survey was administered to 169 North Korean defectors. 35% of respondents considered their experience as 'helpful.' The most distressful issue for the respondents was concerns about family. The largest number of respondents wanted to work on career planning and job selection during counseling sessions. The result of multiple regression analysis indicated that the psychological distress and the understanding of the mental health professional's role had significant influence on intention toward seeking professional help. Network orientation significantly influenced attitudes toward seeking professional help.
