본 연구는 비자살적 자해와 자살적 자해를 한 청소년의 자해 경험을 탐구해 보기 위한 목적에 의해 수행되었다. 이를 위하여 자해 및 자살의 위기를 경험한 청소년 10명과의 심층 인터뷰를 실시하였고, 그 자료를 질적 연구 분석 방법인 현상학을 통해 분석하였다. 그 결과 총 29개의 소주제와 12개의 대주제를 도출하였다. 대주제로는 ‘단순하거나 우회적인 방도로 시작된 자해’, ‘소속감을 유지하기 위해 지속한 자해’, ‘힘든 삶을 견디기 위해 지속한 자해’, ‘신체적 고통으로 심리적 고통을 해소하기 위해 지속한 자해’, ‘자해로 해결되지 않는 고통스러운 감정의 잔재’, ‘지속된 자해로 자기혐오 증가와 삶의 의미 감소’, ‘자해와 자살의 경계에서 갈등한 자해’, ‘자해행위에 대한 부적절감의 부재’, ‘사회적 지지 속에서 느낀 자해 중지에 대한 압박감’, ‘함께 하는 즐거움과 연대감이 선사한 긍정성’, ‘미래 삶의 의지와 성장 욕구로 전향된 마음가짐’, ‘도움 요청과 행동 실천이 이끈 삶의 변화’가 있었다. 이를 선행연구와 비교 분석하는 가운데 논의하였고, 연구의 의의와 시사점, 향후 남겨진 과제 등에 대하여 기술하였다.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the experiences of self-injury among adolescents who have engaged in both non-suicidal and suicidal self-injury. In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 adolescents, and the data were analyzed using phenomenology. The results identified 29 sub-themes and 12 main themes related to adolescents’ self-injurious behaviors. The main themes included: ‘Initial self-injury as simple or indirect acts,’ ‘Persistent self-harm as a coping mechanism for a difficult life,’ ‘Use of physical pain to mitigate psychological distress through self-injury,’ ‘Lingering emotional pain unsolved by self-injury,’ ‘Conflict experienced on the threshold between self-injury and suicidal intent,’ ‘Lack of perceived inappropriateness in self-injurious actions,’ ‘Experienced pressure to cease self-injury amidst social support,’ ‘The positive influence of communal joy and solidarity.’ These themes were examined in the context of existing literature, and the discussion elucidated the study’s implications, significance, and suggestions for future research.
