This study was conducted as basic research for establishing a mid-to long term comprehensive development plan for libraries in Dong-gu, Incheon. It attempted to draw the vision, operation strategy, and service directions by administering questionnaires to local residents and analyzing the needs of library officials, professionals and local residents. From the findings, following issues can be suggested: First, it is necessary to activate the management of small libraries in Dong-gu, Incheon. Second, local residents' needs for improving library facilities and constructing new libraries were found to be higher. Third, it needs to qualitatively and quantitatively enhance library materials for various age groups. Fourth, customized reading and cultural programs should be developed by considering the demand of various age groups. Fifth, the needs for items regarding external cooperation among expected roles of libraries. Sixth, it is necessary to consider how to promote complex cultural space by improving library facilities. Seventh, the librarian personnel should be complement to balance between the internal management of libraries and externally related businesses. Eighth, the space for collecting and keeping materials should be promoted. Ninth, it is necessary to seek the establishment of policies for activating small libraries.
In a situation where OA papers are increasing, POI, which indexes how open the research activities of individual researchers are, is drawing attention. This study investigated the existence of OA papers and the OA method published in international academic journals by domestic LIS researchers, and derived the researchers' POI based on this. In addition, by examining the relationship between the POI index and the researcher's amount of research papers, the research sub field, and the foreign co-authors, it was analyzed whether these factors are relevant to the researcher's POI. As a result, there were 492 papers by 82 researchers whose OA status and method were normally identified through Unpaywall. Second, only 20.7% of papers published in international journals were open accessed, and almost cases were gold and green methods. Third, there were many papers in text mining in medical journals, and the papers opened in the green method are open in institutional repositories of foreign co-authors or transnational subject repositories such as PMC. Third, the POI index was relatively higher for researchers in the field of informetrics, machine learning than other fields. In addition, it was analyzed that the presence or absence of overseas co-authors is related to OA.
This study compares the members of children's reading and culture movement organization versus general public and their children with the aim of understanding how parents' reading activities affect children's reading activities. The study surveyed 477 elementary school students and 483 parents from five special metropolitan cities regarding their reading behaviour. Reading behavior was investigated in terms of reading frequency, book selection information source, reading awareness, and preferred books, and it was confirmed that there was a difference between members of children's reading and culture movement organization and children of the general public. Members of children's reading and culture movement organization and their children showed superior reading habits in terms of both quantity and quality than non-members and their children, and the book selection information service was used. In terms of perception regarding reading, children's reading and culture movement organization members and their children found more "joy" in reading than "help in learning" as compared to the general public and their children. In terms of reading preference, children's reading and culture movement organization members and their children intensively preferred Korean creative fairy tales and picture books while the general public and their children preferred Korean creative fairy tales, picture books, and educational comics. In order to create a healthier reading culture and environment for the long term, the development of more active reading participation methods for the general public is required.
This study aimed to analyze the overall operation status of the Bank of Korea library representing the economic library in Korea, investigate user satisfaction and demand, and to propose a direction for the development of the economic library in the future. To this end, a case study was conducted on changes in the external environment of major libraries at home and abroad, and a user survey was conducted. As a result, the future tasks include introducing smart systems, robotics some library services, non-face-to-face service response spaces that reflect the times, introducing big data analysis services, strengthening user-tailored systems, and activating SNS communication. It proposed developing specialized libraries, online reference and research support services, and providing original DBs for publications to strengthen expertise, maintaining and expanding cloud services, maintaining and expanding cooperative projects, and collecting national knowledge and information.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the form and color of the letter layout among 31 expression methods of official posters during the library week from 1964, for 57 years, and to propose the direction of poster production in the future by revealing what citizens prefer most by conducting a survey based on the results. As a result of analyzing the poster expression form for achieving the purpose of the study, the most common character layout was 'the top position of the character' in 13 out of 31 (41.9%), and in color, 'chromatic color' in 30 out of 31 (96.8%), and the temperature of color with 'cold color', 'fading color' and 'shrink color' in 18 out of 31 (58.1%), respectively. The results of the survey showed that the most preferred was 'top position of characters' for letter layout, and 'chromatic color' and 'cold color', 'advance color' and 'expansion color' were the most preferred for the color classification. Therefore, the character layout of the weekly poster for the library needs to be produced using 'the center position of the letter', and the colors need to be made using 'chromatic color', 'warm color', 'advance color' and 'expansion color'.
A status analysis and focus group interviews with librarians, school librarians and experts were conducted to find a new direction for revitalization of 19 public libraries affiliated to the Chungcheongnam-do Office of Education in the context of the advent of a new educational environment following the 4th industrial revolution. Through the research method, the knowledge experience edu library through the library community school was set as the vision of a public library belonging to the Chungnam Office of Education. The direction of public library service as an edu-library was divided into specialization as an educational library, life cycle customized service, knowledge experience-oriented service, and 4th industrial revolution intelligent information society service. Based on the traditional functions of the library, the space that the future public library should have was presented as an experiential learning space. In this study, a specialized direction for strengthening the educational function of libraries belonging to the Chungnam Office of Education was presented, which will contribute to finding ways to cooperate with schools and school libraries, and will provide a basis for preparing directions for libraries belonging to other regional offices of education.
The purpose of this study is to redefine the competencies of teacher librarians and to derive implications for training and re-educating teacher librarians by analyzing the priorities of competencies. A questionnaire survey targeting teacher librarians based on analytic hierarchy process has been conducted. The results indicate that in terms of the upper-level areas of competencies, it was found that they prioritized teacher librarians' competencies in the following order: information specialists, teachers, administrators, and cooperative leaders. Analysis of the lower levels of competency indicates that the priorities of the required competencies are listed in the following order: collection development, management and preservation, teaching and learning, media production, information service, library cooperative instruction, library assisted instruction, content curation. Therefore, being able to provide information resources by developing a collection of books to support the educational process in school libraries was found to be a critical competency. It seems necessary to cultivate the capacity to manage online and offline collections and produce and provide various teaching media and services by utilizing school library resources. It seems to give implications for the education of teacher librarians.
The study was aimed at verifying the effectiveness of Book-Coding reading education as a reader activity of older elementary school children at a time when high-dimensional thinking abilities were formed. To this end, 30 fifth-grade children of N Elementary School in N-si, Gyeonggi-do, comprised of 15 students from a reading education program using Book-Coding, and 15 students from a reading comprehension program, and applied the reading education program over a total of 12 sessions. The main results of the study are summarized as follows. First, when the effects of the convergence reading education program using Book-Coding on the logical thinking ability of the students in the upper grades in the elementary school were analyzed, all the six sub-factors of logical thinking ability, that is, conservation logic, proportional logic, variable controlling logic, probabilistic logic, correlational inference logic, and combinational logic, were proved to have statistically more meaningful difference than the group writing a book report. Second, the analysis result of the influence of the convergence reading education program using Book-Coding on the creativity of the students in the upper grades of the elementary school showed that all the 13 elements of curiosity, persistence, effectiveness, independence, adventurousness, openness, knowledge, imagination, originality, sensitivity, fluency, flexibility, and accuracy were statistically meaningfully different compared to the book report group. Third, when it was analyzed how the convergence reading education program using Book-Coding affected the creative personality of the elementary school students, all the six factors of curiosity, task commitment, independence, awareness of risk, and openness of thinking, and aesthetics were found out to have a statistically more meaningful difference than the group that wrote a book report.
National libraries have a responsibility to intensively develop, preserve, and provide national collections, which are the knowledge and cultural heritage of a country. In particular, in order to achieve 'advancing the base for access and preservation of national knowledge resources' among the four goals to fulfill the mission of the National Library of Korea, it is necessary to strengthen the national knowledge resources by expanding the external scope to not only domestic materials but also foreign materials. In other words, The National Knowledge Information Center collects the latest and retroactive data produced in Korea, as well as high-quality academic materials produced, distributed, and preserved in foreign countries as well as materials related to Korea. This study drew implications by investigating and analyzing the status of foreign collection and services of national libraries in developed countries. Based on this, the purpose of this study is to compare and evaluate the current level of collection of foreign collections of the National Library of Korea, and then present a strategy to secure high-quality academic and foreign materials related to Korea.
Public library usage is closely related to the accessibility to library facilities. Therefore, public library planning and development authorities should consider the policies for improving the library accessibility of community, for releasing disparities of the spatial accessibility and for increasing location efficiency of public libraries. In this regard, this study strives to analyze the spatial distribution of public libraries in Busan and to derive the regions that lack public libraries by identifying main characteristics using geographical information systems (GIS): identify the blind spot for public library service, analyze the hot and cold spot for the supply of libraries, and identify the vulnerable areas of library based on population density. The result of the study will contribute to understand the spatial distribution of public libraries in Busan and to prioritize sites where public library should be constructed in order to improve the accessibility to public library services.
This study aims to obtain implications for educational information services for elementary school teachers by analyzing their information seeking behavior. The in-depth interview was carried out in-depth interviews with 11 elementary school teachers and it analyzed of the core roles and tasks of elementary school teachers, the required information and usage behavior of information sources. The study result showed that elementary school teachers perceived homeroom duties, teaching/learning activities, school duties, and other as their works and tasks, and the response to the importance of task performance was homeroom teacher, teaching-learning activities, school works, and other tasks. Also, elementary school teachers needed information in order of teaching-learning activities, homeroom teacher, school works and they used various information sources including web, interpersonal sources and book. Moreover, this study observed some factors that elementary school teacher mainly used web information source which other elementary school teacher developed and that they got teaching-learning materials from fellow teachers. Based on these findings, the author proposed teacher librarian share library based instruction materia in web resource, provide cooperative educational information service through learning community, and provide homeroom work material for elementary school teachers.
As part of effort to develop the strategies of internationalization of social science academic journals in South Korea, this study attempts to verify the measurement invariance of journal selection criteria across the groups of library and information science researchers and social science researchers. The authors collected 146 survey responses from researchers who have published at least one paper in SSCI/Scopus-indexed social science journals between 2014 and 2016. As a result of the study, it was found that the configural and partial metric invariance of the journal selection criteria held across the two groups, implying that the model of journal selection criteria is appropriate to use in the field of social science as well as library and information science. Additionally, the authors investigated the perceptions of journal selection criteria indicators in the two groups, and it was shown that researchers in both groups considered peer review and indexing in major databases important. The findings of this study could be useful for publishers or academic societies to develop improvement strategies of their journals.
With the introduction of 'Reading One Book a Semester' in the 2015 curriculum, more and more activities are being done to read the same books on a classroom basis. Accordingly, librarians need to properly support the teacher's book recommendation and book selection process, which consists of classes. This study aims to establish effective school library services based on this by identifying differences in elementary school students' reading interests when reading a book recommended by a teacher in the class. To this end, all students of A Elementary School were given a book selection class by class to select one of the teacher's recommended books, and students were interested in reading before and after reading. As a result, students who read the books they chose showed higher 'interest after reading' than those who read the books they did not choose. However, students who had high 'interest before reading' even though they read books they did not choose showed high 'interest after reading'. 'Interest before reading' were higher for students who were provided with book information evenly and used the school library more frequently. Therefore, librarians need to provide a variety of book information and services to increase the frequency of school library use to increase 'interest before reading', which positively affects self-selective reading.
The purpose of the research is to find out both what information tweens (12~14 years old adolescents) need and how they use YouTube to satisfy with their information needs. In order to achieve the goal, the research collected the data by conducting a survey on tweens (N=130) and analyzed the data with statistical processes. The research found out some significant results: first, tweens frequently use the informaton on YouTube and search for leisure information most often. Second, tweens search for information on YouTube because of ease and convenience on learning information even though they do not trust the information on YouTube. Third, tweens regard that YouTube play the role as a significant information source and searching tool, and use information on YouTube because the information on YouTube are composed of easy-to-understand video format. On the basis of the results, the research suggests and discusses how information organization such as public or school libraries provide information services for youth groups effectively.
The coronavirus infection-19 (hereinafter referred to as Corona 19) that occurred last year has not been ended until now. There have also been major changes in the library environment. This study focuses on changes in the library environment due to prolonged infectious diseases. In addition, it aims to derive implications for library services in the New Normal era by analyzing changes in user needs over time. For this purpose, we have comprehensively summarized the response activities of libraries due to the spread of Corona 19 in 2020, and analyzed changes in user needs that appeared on social media. Key terms were selected by collecting 496,741 tweets related to libraries in 2019 and 2020, and analysis by year and period by operation type was conducted. Through the analysis, the needs of library users in 2020 were classified into four issues, and the implications for each issue were derived.
The purpose of this study is to derive the implications of operating the Media and Information Literacy (MIL) curriculum in Korea through analysis of MIL curriculum and guidance in the Philippines. The Philippine Ministry of Education runs the MIL as a core subject that high school students in grades 2-3 had to complete. MIL in the Philippines is a tool curriculum that integrates information, media, and digital literacy. In the MIL curriculum, a total of 17 units are designed to be operated for a total of 80 hours, 20 weeks in a semester. And it presents two content criteria, two achievement criteria and 58 learning competencies. The implications drawn from the research results are as follows. First, the chapter presented in the MIL curriculum can be composed only of the knowledge of a higher category or core concept of subject content. Second, it is necessary to present the concept of the term used in the MIL curriculum and specific examples according to the concept. Third, it is necessary to specify the contents necessary for practice in the MIL textbook and to strengthen the competence for the function. MIL, proposed by UNESCO and designated and operated as a subject in the Philippines, needs to be designated as a subject in Korea and operated as a curriculum.
This study aims to suggest the sustainable services for academic library in the New Normal Age, analyzing the online services during the COVID-19 pandemic. For this purpose, this study examined the operation condition of academic libraries' services during the COVID-19, analyzing the untact and online services of 63 libraries of universities which have more than 10,000 students. And this research classified the online services into three types, which are 'collection', 'facilities', 'programs' and examined the library homepage and development plans of academic libraries. This study also looked into the services of Korean public libraries and foreign libraries to suggest the sustainable services for academic library. As a result, this study suggests 'providing online materials for course reserves', 'expansion of research and study curation services to invigorate the use of library materials', 'introducing the smart library system and renovation of library facility and space services', 'planning of online programs through expansion of interaction with users'.
This study aims to analyze the trend of library use according to the expansion of public library infrastructure in Korea, and to search for new roles and services of libraries based on the results of the study. Using the statistical analysis, literature review and partially interview method, the number of borrowers and loans from 2009 to 2019 were analyzed. The result of the survey reveals that the number of public libraries increased by 61.3% during the survey period, while the number of borrowers decreased by 57.5%, and the number of book loans increased only by 18.2%. The result of the analysis claims that the causes of the decrease in the number of materials borrowers were an error in the process of inputting statistics and manipulating the number of book loans by the local library. The population of children and young adults decreased during the survey period, which led to a decrease in the number of children and young adult borrowers. The result of the study reveals that the increase in the use of public libraries in Korea, like other advanced countries, is stagnant. The following new roles and services are suggested for the development of public libraries: Libraries expand non-face-to-face services and electronic resources, and promote their use. Libraries expand cultural and lifelong learning programs further.
Recently, libraries are trying to communicate with users using various social media. Among them, Instagram is the most used SNS by users recently. Therefore, in this study, in order to effectively operate the library Instagram, we looked at how Instagram in the library is operated, what posts and contents people are interested in, and how the library can utilize it. By analyzing the Instagram operation status of Instagram, we tried to suggest improvement plans and activation plans. For this purpose, theoretical background research on SNS and Instagram, analysis of prior research, and related data were collected and analyzed. Next, for 82 domestic library accounts opened on Instagram, the library type, region, and Instagram account number of posts, 'followers', 'follows', images, etc. were collected, and the Text, hashtags, upload date, number of 'likes' and comments were analyzed. As a result of the study, it was found that increasing followers, uploading user-customized posts, formalizing account profiles, using library-specific hashtags, and communication with users are necessary to activate library Instagram.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the status of e-books usage in small university library and to suggest implications for e-book management policies. To do that, a survey was conducted with students in a local small university, and the valid responses of 259 people were analyzed. As a result of the analysis, the preference of paper books (71%) was higher than that of e-books (12%). However, satisfaction with e-books (45.6%) was higher than that of paper books (27.9%) if they had experience using e-books. In addition, satisfaction was highest when using e-books for general reading, and it was found that the use device preferred to use a tablet. Based on the results of this study, we proposed some suggestions; 1) establishment of e-books service policy and promotion plan, 2) use of e-books dedicated devices and development of user-friendly e-books using environment, 3) providing various topics of e-books, 4) formation of an association for joint use of e-books between small library universities.
