본 연구는 대학생을 대상으로 한 개인상담에서 일어나는 조기종결 현상과 관련된 내담자와 상담자의 특성을 알아보는데 있다. 이를 위하여 첫째, 종결의 형태를 예측하는 상담자와 내담자의 특성 둘째, 조기종결 내담자와 합의종결 내담자간의 중요한 심리특성의 차이점 셋째, 조기종결 내담자의 심리특성과 상담자의 특성과의 관계성 넷째, 조기종결 현상이 더 빨리 일어나는데 작용을 하는 내담자의 심리특성을 연구문제로 삼았으며 마지막으로, 자유기술문 분석을 통한 조기종결의 직접적인 원인 규명을 시도하였다. 본 연구의 대상은 부산, 대구, 전북, 서울 소재의 대학교 학생상담실을 자발적으로 찾았던 내담자들 가운데 합의종결한 내담자 50명과 조기종결한 내담자 43명을 합하여 총 93명이 선발되었다. 조기종결 내담자 및 합의종결 내담자들에게는 다섯 가지 수준의 심리특성들이 측정되었다. 합의종결 및 조기종결에 공통으로 개입된 상담자는 총 23명이었다. 상담자에게는 인구학적 변인과 상담자의 특성들이 측정되었다. 본 연구의 결과 상담의 종결형태 결정요인은 내담자의 나이, 상담자의 상담유형, 그리고 내담자에 의한 상담자 평가였으며, 합의종결과 조기종결 내담자 집단을 비교한 결과 두 집단은 상담동기와 상담자에 대한 평가에서 집단간에 유의미한 차이가 있었다. 또한, 상담자의 특성과 조기종결 내담자의 심리특성과의 관계, 조기종결의 시점이 빨라지는데 작용하는 내담자의 심리특성과 조기종결의 직접적인 이유 등이 규명되고 논의되었다.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychological characteristics of premature- terminated college clients and counselor variables in individual counseling. Ninety-three clients(50 premature-terminated clients and 43 clients who terminate counseling with agreement with counselors) and twenty-three counselors participated in this study. The results of this study were as follows: First, It was found that counseling style as characteristics of counselors and age as characteristics of clients were significant predictors of the types of termination. Second, The differences between premature-terminated clients and clients who terminate counseling with agreement with counselors were motivation of counseling and counselor evaluation by clients. Third, Psychological characteristics of prematurely terminated clients according to characteristics of counselors(2 types of counseling approach, years of counseling experience) were as follows: 1)According to the client response of counseling motivation, person-centered counseling and behavioral counseling were differently perceived by clients. 2)The premature-terminated clients evaluated the psychodynamically oriented psychotherapists negatively. 3)Client's motivation for counseling was statistically significantly related to their counseling experiences. 4) Psychological characteristics of clients that could predict the acceleration of premature termination in counseling were counselor evaluation by clients and motivation for counseling. Finally, accorging to the free description sentence analysis, 30-40% of the premature-terminated college clients dropped out because problems are solved while the others dropped out because they were dissatisfied with the counselor and they didn't have time to see a counselor.
