본 연구는 상담자와 내담자가 각각 상담에 대해 어떤 기대를 얼마만큼 하는 지 확인하여 그 차이점을 밝히는 데 목적이 있다. 더불어 이들 각각의 기대가 상담 경력과 상담 경험에 따라 어떻게 달라지는 지도 확인하였다. 또한 이러한 상담자-내담자의 기대가 그들의 문화적 특성과 어떤 관련이 있는 지도 알아보았다. 상담을 요청한 청소년 내담자 48명과 청소년 상담자 66명이 연구에 참여하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 상담자가 내담자에 비해 지시성을 제외한 모든 영역에서 높게 기대하였고, 상담자는 양육성, 솔직성, 구체성, 신뢰성 등의 상담관계에 대한 기대를, 내담자는 지시성, 구체성, 전문성, 직면성 등 상담자의 전문적인 특성에 대한 기대를 높게 하여 상담자와 내담자간의 차이를 보였다. 특히 지시성에 대해 상담자는 가장 낮은 점수로, 내담자는 가장 높은 점수로 기대하여 둘 간의 차이점을 분명하게 보여주었다. 한편 경력상담자는 초보상담자에 비해 모든 영역에 대해 높게 기대하였고, 상담유경험 내담자는 무경험자보다 동기성과 개방성에 대해 더 높게 기대하였다. 문화적 특성 중 수직적 집단주의가 상담에 대한 기대와 긍정적 상관이 있었으며, 수직적 개인주의와는 무관하였다. 상담자와 내담자간의 기대 차이, 문화적 특성과의 관련성 및 상담과정에서 이를 다루는 방법에 대해 논의하였다.
The purpose of this study was to identify the difference of expectation about counseling between counselors and clients, beginning and experienced counselors, and previously counseling experienced and non-experienced clients. The correlation with their cultural difference(individualism-collectivism and verticalism-horizontalism) and expectation about counseling was also examined. Participants were 66 counselors and 48 adolescents. The results were a) counselor's expectation was higher than client's one in most subscales, b) experienced counselors had higher score on most sub-expectations than beginning counselors, c) previously counseling experienced clients had higher score on expectation of motivation and openness than non-experienced clients, and d) for both counselors and clients, the expectation about counseling was positively correlated with vertical collectivism and was not correlated with vertical individualism. In addition, the meaning of the differences and implications of these findings were discussed.
