본 연구는 개인의 수치심경향성과 죄책감경향성이 심리적 특성에서 어떠한 차이점이 있는지를 검토하였고, 수치심경향성과 죄책감경향성이 적응에 영향을 미치는 과정에서 보이는 이질성에 대해 확인해 보고자하였다. 또한, 부정적 사건뿐만 아니라 긍정적 사건을 경험한 후에도 수치심경향성과 죄책감경향성에 따라 정서적 반응과 인지적 해석에서 차이를 보이는지를 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 남녀 대학생 및 고등학생 559명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 그 결과 수치심경향성은 반추적 반응양식, 과일반화, 사회불안과는 정적 상관을, 죄책감경향성은 반성적 반응양식과 성취동기와 정적 상관이 나타났다. 그리고 개인의 수치심경향성이 적응에 영향을 미치는 과정에서는 반추적 반응양식이, 죄책감경향성이 적응에 영향을 미치는 과정에서는 반성적 반응양식이 매개효과가 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 이는 개인의 수치심경향성과 죄책감경향성이 적응에 영향을 미치는 과정에서 내부초점적 반응양식(반추적, 반성적 반응양식)이 하나의 매개변인이 됨을 보여주는 결과이다. 또한, 수치심경향성이 높은 사람은 죄책감경향성이 높은 사람보다 긍정적인 사건 경험을 하더라도 정서적 반응을 덜 경험하며, 인지적인 해석에 있어서도 부정적인 측면을 더 가지고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 결과를 고려해 볼 때, 상담 장면에서 수치심경향성이 높은 내담자들에 대해서 좀 더 심층적인 이해와 상담적 대안이 필요할 것으로 보인다.
The purpose of the present research is to investigate the psychological characteristics of shame-proneness and guilt-proneness by identifying the differential effects of shame-proneness and guilt-proneness on adaptation-mechanisms. This study examines the differential effects of shame-proneness and guilt-proneness on affective responses and cognitive interpretations in positive situations as well as in negative situations. The results indicate that while the relationship between guilt-proneness and adaptation was mediated by a reflective response style, the relationship between shame-proneness and adaptation was mediated by a ruminative response style. In particular, shame-proneness was not found to be related with psychological satisfaction and affective response in positive situations. In negative situations, the participants who had higher shame-proneness were more likely to attribute the results to their personal traits than those who had higher guilt-proneness. This study extended the current body of knowledge on the essential property of two self-conscious concepts.
