치료 동맹은 전 상담회기에 걸쳐 변화하는 역동적인 개념으로, 상담자와 내담자의 상호작용 양상에 따라 다양한 유형으로 나타날 수 있다. 이 연구의 목적은 치료 동맹의 발달 유형을 확인하고 상담 성과와의 관계를 밝히는 것이다. 이를 위해 매 회기 내담자들이 평정한 치료 동맹 점수의 기울기와 잔차 점수를 사용하여 군집분석을 실시하였고, 치료 동맹의 수준과 상담 성과의 관계는 상관분석을, 치료 동맹의 발달 유형과 상담 성과의 관계는 공분산분석을 통해 살펴보았다. 연구 결과 첫째, 상담 장면에서 치료 동맹의 발달 유형은 3가지로 나타났으며 이를 각각 ‘상승형’, ‘위기 해결형’, ‘정체형’으로 명명하였다. ‘상승형’은 치료 동맹이 변동을 겪으면서 증가하는 특성을, ‘위기 해결형’은 한 시점에서 치료 동맹이 급격하게 하락했다가 다시 회복되는 특성을, ‘정체형’은 치료 동맹이 큰 변화 없이 비슷하게 유지되지만 평균적으로 회기의 증가에 따라 미묘한 하락 을 보이는 특성을 보였다. 둘째, 치료 동맹의 수준과 종결 시 대인 관계 문제의 개선 정도는 중간 정도의 상관이 있었으나 치료 동맹의 서로 다른 유형 간에 상담 성과의 차이는 발견되지 않았다. 이러한 연구 결과들의 의의와 제한점에 대해 논의하였다.
