Gender Role Conflict and Willingness to Seek Counseling in Male University Students: Testing the Mediating Roles of Social Stigma, Self-Stigma and Attitudes toward Seeking Counseling

Abstract

To get a better understanding of why men are reluctant to seek professional help for their psychological distress, the authors examined 3 mediators (social stigma and self-stigma associated with seeking counseling and attitudes toward seeking counseling) regarding the link between gender role conflict and willingness to seek counseling by using structural equation modeling with data from 385 male university students. Results indicated that this link was partially mediated by these 3 factors. That is, men experiencing greater gender role conflict were more likely to have high social stigma and self-stigma; high social stigma and high self-stigma then led to less positive attitudes and subsequently to less willingness to seek counseling. In addition, the relationships among the study variables were different for those with previous counseling experience than those without previous counseling experience. For those without previous counseling experience, the partially mediating model was fit to the data, whereas for those with previous counseling experience indirect effects were not significant.
