The Relationship between Childhood Emotional Trauma and Borderline Personality Disorder Traits in Emerging Adults: The Mediating Effects of Insecure Adult Attachment and Internalized Shame

Abstract

This study investigated the mediating effects of insecure adult attachment (attachment avoidance, attachment anxiety) and internalized shame on the relationship between childhood emotional trauma (CET) and borderline personality disorder(BPD) traits. 388 Korean participants completed online questionnaires. Structural equation analysis was performed using Mplus 8.6. Results: Positive correlations existed among all variables. All paths between CET and BPD traits were positively significant, except for the path from attachment avoidance to BPD traits, which was negatively significant. In the relationship between CET and BPD traits, the mediating effects of attachment anxiety and internalized shame were positively significant, while the mediating effect of attachment avoidance was negatively significant. In the relationship between CET and BPD traits, the dual mediating effect of attachment anxiety and internalized shame was positively significant, while the dual mediating effect of attachment avoidance and internalized shame was negatively significant. The significance and limitations of the study were discussed.
