본 연구는 국내 의과대학생과 일반대학생을 대상으로 대학 내 학업 서열이 학업 자아개념을 매개하여 자아존중감에 미치는 영향을 확인하고, 두 집단에서 그 관계가 상이한지 검증하였다. 또한 두 집단에서 학업 서열, 학업 자아개념, 자아존중감의 구조적 관계를 우월성의 자기가치감 수반성이 조절하는지 확인하였다. 이를 위해 국내 의과대학생 152명과 일반대학생 155명, 총 307명의 온라인 설문 응답을 SPSS 28.0과 PROCESS macro 4.0 프로그램을 사용해 분석하였다. 매개효과 분석 결과, 두 집단에서 학업 서열과 자아존중감의 관계를 학업 자아개념이 매개하였으며, 학업 서열, 학업 자아개념, 자아존중감의 관계는 두 집단이 통계적으로 유의한 차이를 보이지 않았다. 조절된 매개효과 분석 결과, 의과대학생 집단에서 학업 서열과 자아존중감의 관계를 우월성의 자기가치감 수반성으로 조절된 학업 자아개념이 매개하였다. 즉, 의과대학생 집단에서 우월성의 자기가치감 수반성이 클수록 학업 서열이 학업 자아개념을 매개로 자아존중감에 미치는 영향이 증가하였다. 일반대학생 집단에서는 학업 자아개념의 매개효과가 우월성의 자기가치감 수반성으로 조절되지 않았다. 연구 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구의 의의와 제한점, 후속 연구를 위한 제언을 제시하였다.
This study investigated the empirical associations between academic ranking, academic self-concept, the contingency of self-worth based on superiority, and self-esteem among South Korean medical school students and university students. Mediation and moderated mediation analyses indicated that academic self-concept was a significant mediator between academic ranking and self-esteem. Furthermore, this mediation model was moderated by contingency of self-worth (superiority). The study utilized responses from 307 university students, analyzed using SPSS version 28.0 and the PROCESS macro version 4.0. The findings indicated that academic self-concept mediated the relationship between academic ranking and self-esteem in both groups. However, no significant differences were observed in path coefficients relating to academic ranking, academic self-concept, and self-esteem between the two groups. Notably, the mediation of academic self-concept, moderated by the contingency of self-worth (superiority), was only significant among medical school students. The implications, limitations of the study, and suggestions for future research were discussed.
