Outsourcing has been around a long time in libraries. Card catalogs of LC, and approvalplans, subscription agents and binding of journal are all forms of outsourcing that librarieshave come to accept as normal procedures. Nevertheless. outsourcing is one of the mostcontroversial topics discussed in library management today. It carries meanings ranging fromtraditionally outsourced activities to more recent outsourcing of entire functions anddepartments. This study will provide background and context for the issue of outsourcing.suggest several useful guidelines for the entities of library outsourcing in Korea. One of thecommon rationales for outsourcing is that the activity being outsourced is a "noncore"functions to the mission of the libraries. The best approach to outsourcing is probably a'middle-ground' objective approache-ground' objective approach.
The purpose of this study is to establish the new concept of "user-centered" suitable for currentdigital environment and to derive system design factors necessary for user-centered informationretrieval system design of the university libraries.The result of this study can be summarized as follows .First, the concept of 'users-centered' in digital environment where the supporting role ofintermediaries is growing bigger than before in the interaction with remote information retrievalsystem can be defined as the new concept of 'expansion of knowledge'.Second, 6 kinds of system design factors derived for user-centered information retrievalsystem design of the university librariesf the university libraries.
'I'he purpose of this study is to offer the basic data in an Online Public Access Catalog(OPAC) for improving information guidance service and user interface when constructing a new system. For this purpose, users' using situations, purposes, frequencies, and types were examined and the problems of the present OPAC were found and some measures of improvement were proposed. Literature studies and a survey were paralleled in this study. The former was based on the previous studies to theorize the use of OPAC, and the latter was performed to clarify the relationships between some factors that affect the use of OPAC and OPAC's using levels, which was made on 308 users, with questionnaire and interviews, who have been using OPAC in Shimin Library.
The purpose of this paper is to find out how the education for collection development has been changed and what are the contents of the collection development-related courses. The author tried to search some historical backgrounds on how selection of books became collection development and management. As for the ducation for collection development, the changes the course titles dealing with collection development were surveyed, and the contents of the courses provided by the Departments of Library and Information Science were analyzed. It was found out that though the course titles have been changed from selection of materials collection development, the contents showed their emphases on such selection-oriented topics as selection tools and acquisitions. It is concluded that as far as the contents are concerned, most of the important components for collection development have been taught. Based on the findings, a few suggestions including that there should be efforts to narrow the gap between the theories taught at library schools and the practices performed by librarians are recommended.
