Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the research trends and their experiment results on the applications of the language models for information retrieval. We reviewed the previous studies with the following categories: (1) the first generation of language modeling information retrieval (LMIR) experiments which are mainly focused on comparing the language modeling information retrieval with the traditional retrieval models in their retrieval performance, and (2) the second generation of LMIR experiments which are focused on comparing the expanded language modeling information retrieval with the basic language models in their retrieval performance. Through the analysis of the previous experiments results, we found that (1) language models are outperformed the probabilistic model or vector space model approaches, and (2) the expended language models demonstrated better results than the basic language models in their retrieval performance.

Public libraries have been well adapted for the changes in lifestyle and socio-cultural environments brought by the rapid advancement of information technology, the development of mass communities, and the increase in leisure activities. This study aims to identify the status of the classification retrieval operation by investigating and analyzing the classification retrieval related to the books in the university libraries. The investigation concentrated on whether the classification retrieval service is provided, Access Method and classification retrieval level. The data was collected from 97 libraries where URL access was available during the period of survey in 100 libraries selected by the systematic sampling. As a result, while 92.8% of 97 libraries provided the classification retrieval service, 52.2% of it enabled the access to classification retrieval service only by the classification number and 47.8% by classification number and classification directory. Consequently, it was found that the retrieval environment in the libraries where the access was enabled only by classification number should be urgently improved for the activation of classification retrieval.

Abstract

This paper examined the structure of internet bookstore users' subjectivity by focusing on their beliefs, values and attitudes. Q methodology was utilized for the study. After constituting 36 Q sample and 28 P sample, data were collect from April 15, 2005 to April 22 2005. The analyses showed 3 types of subjectivity structures. The first one was “the economic benefit-seeking type." Those in this type were motivated to use internet bookstores to achieve economic benefits. They paid more attention to the prices discounted than the web site contents provided by internet bookstores. This type was conspicuously found among college students. The second one was the “information-seeking type." People in this category made visits to internet bookstores in order to obtain new information or professional materials. This type was dominantly found among women. The third one was the “convenience-seeking type." Those in this type were concerned not only with the accessibility and convenience, but also with such practical issues as delivery, price, applicability, payment, and bonus. This type was conspicuously observed among white collar workers. These findings suggests that in order to make internet bookstores more attractive to users, it is demanded to understand various needs held by users and map out sophisticated marketing strategies on the basis of such a knowledge.

Abstract

This study was to elucidate the theoretical backgrounds and realities of consumer health information services from a review of the literature, to manifest the actual conditions of consumer health information services by domestic hospital libraries and public libraries, and then to activate library services at least to meet the needs of the services by enhancing their role for consumer demand for health information. This paper propose to activate consumer health information services, as follows: First, librarians both in hospital and in public libraries cognize that consumer health information services really are needed. Furthermore, they expect that when consumer health information services are implemented, the function of the library would be expanded even to the realm of preventive health medical care for consumers and as well as to the patients' right to know. Second, it is recommended that hospital libraries should actively perform their consumer health information services, along with the active collection of health information and materials and develop related bibliographies for hospital libraries to provide patients and their families with medical information. Public libraries also are required to actively collect, maintain and manage health information and to equip themselves with special books in their reference rooms. Third, it is recommended to launch such a cooperation network with a subsystem of MEDLIS as CHIN or CHIPS in the United States of America, to construct an integrated database of consumer health information and materials, an interlibrary system, a reference room service system as well as a cooperation network among hospital and public libraries.

Abstract

Data produced during scientific and technical activities usually have value as standard reference data (SRD) which is a well-documented numeric value assessed for reliability and accuracy. The main criteria in the evaluation for SRD is how well their production is documented including a sample preparation, measurement method, data processing and so on, other than reference data. SRD is represented as a certified numeric value with uncertainty. In this study, the SRD in the area of material properties was introduced to provide understanding of SRD and its evaluation method. Also the national SRD system was studied. The national SRD system is composed of the center for the SRD, the data centers, and the committee. The role and task of those components were studied. The legislational and systematic supports for the system were proposed in this study.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to emphasize the importance of index definition and to prepare the basis of optimal index in bibliographic retrieval system. For the purpose, this research studied a index extraction theory on index tag definition and index normalization from the bibliographic marc database and analyzed a retrieval utilization rate of extracted index. In this experiment, we divided index between text-type and code-type about the generated 29,219,853 indexes from 2,200,488 bibliographic records and analyzed utilization rate by the comparison of index-type and index term of web logs. According to the result, the text-type indexes such as title, author, publication, subject are showed high utilization rate while the code-type indexes were showed low utilization rate. So this study suggests that the unused index is removed from index definition to optimize index.

Abstract

This study examines how CIP program of the Library of Congress distributes, provides an access to, and helps upgrade CIP data through bibliographic utilities. LC CIP program can be characterized by the participation of many U.S. mainstream publishers, a continuing increase in the number of CIP data assigned annually, and an effort to immediately upgrade the completeness and accuracy of CIP data in cooperation with bibliographic utilities. Cooperation between LC and bibliographic utilities in performing quality control is worth noting, when compared with the limitation of CIP program of the National Library of Korea. It is suggested that the National Library of Korea should provide complete and accurate bibliographic and authority records for other types of new and old library materials published in Korea as well as CIP data for new monographic materials.
