Abstract

'The Library and Information Science' originated from the 'Library Science'. A school of academic reputation of the West is calling names of studies by the name of 'Library, Archives, and Information Science' and studying materials, knowledge and information of the library, archives, and information centers. I think that many of the researcher neglect basic studies of the library and information science. Therefore, I'd like to call attention to the fact.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to review current issues in practices of acquisition, organization and access to the web resources operating at libraries. Literature reviews were conducted to analyze patterns of access to the web resources, such as electronic journals, bibliographic databases and web sites used at libraries. Also analyzed was information seeking behaviors of researchers how they access to web resources.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the present status of outsourcing of the academic library working in Japan and to suggest the alternatives of the problems facing with conversing the National University to the Corporation(named the government authority Corporation). The Corporation is implemented because of government financial crisis and decreasing of student candidates. As the result, the university autonomy will be enlarged, but the government financial assistance will be decreased. So outsourcing will be increased in the reason of the cutting of working expenses. For facing to the that environmental change, academic library should make preparations of their future.

Abstract

This study is made of proofreading some documents about 'Tripitaka Koreana', which was unknown and not noticed quite well until now and is also for montemplating the features of 'Qidanzang' that were accepted in 'Tripitaka'. By all the researches the following facts were found out. First, 'Qidanzang' included in 'Tripitaka' were all 18 cases. Second, 'Qidanzang' that were corrected and accepted into 'Tripitaka' were 42cases. Third, 'Qidanzang' that have errors at comparing documents were all 11cases. Fourth, the sutra that were accepted in the comparative book were all 57 cases. Fifth, unaccepted sutras , which wer found out at cmparative documents, were 4cases.At last, from the analysis abouve, we notice that most of the 'Qidanzang', not part of it, were accepted into 'Tripitaka Koreana' and like the previous viewpoint, 'Qidanzang' was an excellent book but it also had a few mistakes.

Abstract

This study investigates general characteristics and major changes in the Railway Bureau Library(RBL: Choldo Doseogwan) Classification, along with a comparative analysis with other related classifications used at that time. This study can make clear some differences and characteristics of the classification used during the Japanese occupation of Korea and its relation to the major classifications used after the independence of the Korea.

Abstract

The literature on Korean women's history from ancient times to the end of the Japanese occupation is collected and analyzed. The total number of documents treated in this paper is 369. The documents, all written by 2003 include books, theses for master's and Ph. D. degrees, journal articles, and digital papers on the Internet home pages. The results shows that the favored themes of the researchers were women's status, education, and arts. Other subjects include women's activities, daily life, biographies, and religion. The most preferred period was the Chosun Dynasty and the least preferred period was the Koryo Dynasty. The usual method of these documents is narrative. There are few attempts to compare women's history of Korea with that of other countries.

Abstract

This study was investigated to the geographical categories and arrangement of library classifications and public organizations in order to understand the geographical category comprehension and canon from the north-west to south-east in Korean library classification and then to develop a Korean geographical classification system. Research method was the examination of different type of library classifications(DDC, NDC, LCC) and geographical categorizations of the public organizations. The results show that there was not a principle of categorization and arrangement for geographical information. This study proposes to the three hierarchical structures and radial category arrangement from center area to side area for developing Korean geographical classification.

Abstract

This study explores the ways to upgrade the services of the special libraries and information centers and strengthen their competitiveness. First, this study examines the characteristics of the special libraries and information centers and the competitive environments which they face. And this study considers the possibilities to make use of Knowledge Management(KM) and Competitive Intelligence(CI) in special libraries and information centers in Korea. Finally, this study provides the management strategies to strengthen the competitiveness of the special libraries and information centers in Korea.

Abstract

This study intends to make a comprehensive inquiry about the appropriateness of library cataloging in Korea. Emphasis was on analyzing how both reasonable and systematic library cataloging process and method are as the central axis of library operations. To the end, this study examined U.S. libraries' cataloging principle and practice with the case of 2 research libraries and 2 public libraries in Washington state. The focus was on investigating their values and philosophies about library cataloging. The result of this study is expected to be useful in preparing the strategies to overcome the problems and limitations in cataloging practices of Korean libraries.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the emotional and behavioral characteristics of information seeking of university students in context in which a class assignment should be completed. An attempt was made to understand better individualized and selective behavior observed while seeking information in the commonly defined context. Data was collected from content analysis of self-reports by 54 university students majoring in library and information science. Major findings were analyzed in relation to the preception and feelings over, and barriers and strategies of seeking information, and the use of information resources.

Abstract

The OAI(Open Archives Initiative) is an evolving protocol and philosophy regarding interoperability for digital libraries. This protocol has its roots in an effort to enhance access to digital libraries as a means of increasing the availability of scholarship communication. Thus, this research outlines the history of the OAI protocol, the basic model of SP(service provider)/DP(data provider), and the prerequisites to implement the OAI protocol. Viewed in this light, this paper also describes the experiences of KERIS project of SP/DP model and lists the differences between prerequisites and KERIS case.

Abstract

This study intends for providing a methodological foundation for information behavior research. To the end, we classify the 'Minority Groups' into two separate groups, ethnic minority and socio-economic minority. Then we reviewed the relevant literature with emphasis on analyzing the methodological characteristics. In details, our focus was on identifying the queries and variables of the collected major articles, and on introducing the methods used for data collection and interpretation in those articles.

This paper starts by exploring the problems of public education under knowledge based society. It then analyzes the questionnaire about the function of school library media center as a culture space. The results show that school library media center should take a role as repertory appreciation center of various arts, recreation center, and interactive community.

Abstract

Traditional role of library is focused on the book collection and its reference service. However, library should be stressed the need of educational activity in the future. This study described to classify the roles of public library, which are book collecting and its reference services, educational activities, event place service for region community. Observation survey on the public libraries in Boston and its Vicinity shows that public libraries have various children's programs and they are getting more important roles. Public libraries of case study have done not only the roles for reference service space but also the informal lifelong education institute for region community. Library as the informal lifelong education institute deserve special emphasis on the development of education program.

Abstract

This study addresses two aspects related to knowledge management systems. First, it introduces knowledge management systems for broadcasting stations to develop a specific model. Second, it introduces the team-based approach as a methodology for designing and developing knowledge management systems. Beginning with a discussion on the concept of knowledge management, this paper examines the characteristics, current situations and evolved paradigms of broadcasting stations. In addition, 6 web sites of broadcasting stations are analyzed. The team-based approach is also presented in some detail on how it can be applied to other organizations. Results of this study show a knowledge management system with five subsystems for broadcasting stations.
