Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the problems, which academic libraries in the U.S., U.K., Australia, and Canada have faced since the 1990s. These problems are mostly caused by environmental changes in higher education. In this study, only discussed are the problems that academic libraries in various countries have commonly experienced, but not unique ones libraries in each country has due to its own national, societal, cultural, academic or informational situations. Major problems include continuing decrease in library expenditures, changing role of libraries themselves, changing nature of library collections, development of information technology and technological infrastructure on campus, steep increase in prices of scholarly journals, and relative decrease in purchasing powers of libraries. These problems are all closely inter-related, and seem to require more comprehensive and systematic strategic solutions carried out by the national or government intervention, rather than individual libraries.

Abstract

This study aims to find the way how to operate cataloging work effectively and share it between libraries through web based cataloging manual. There have been various trials in using web based tools in other parts of library such as acquisition and reference service. However, in case of cataloging, the rules and policies of each library are not united, and any cooperation in sharing them between libraries is not done. Therefore, for information sharing, practical cooperation and unification in cataloging work, each library needs to make web cataloging manuals and share them. That is, building the web based cataloging tools makes it easier to access the cataloging works and keep them updated. Additionally, it could improve the communication between the librarians who are in charge of cataloging and provide the chance for cooperation and information sharing between libraries. With these roles, web based cataloging manual could be the basic for standardization of cataloging.

This study analyzes 47 articles dealing with refugees in library and information science field. The subjects of these articles are such various as the cases of refugee service in libraries and information centers, the library service guidance for refugees, information resources of refugees and forced migration study, and information need and information seeking behavior of refugees. However, the research of this area has such limitations and weakness as the small scale of articles about refugees, the scarcity of professional researchers, the deficient studies concentrating refugees directly, and the unprepared research methods. In particular, there was no article about refugee which was produced by the library and information science field in South Korea. Urgently needed is the research of information needs and information seeking behavior of North Korean refugees considering the recent influx of North Korean refugee into South Korea.

This study is a bibliographical investigation of Xixia woodcut print <Pumo-Unjungkyong> which was discovered in a stupa at Khara-Khoto in early 20th century. Comparing with other <Pumo-Unjungkyong> published in Koryo Dynasty, I examine the relativity of both prints.
