This article intends to discuss about the strategies and methods that the Korean library community should follow to make the ongoing experiment of ‘bibliotherapy program' be successful, and eventually, settle up as a regular library service program. The main focus of discussion was on figuring out both theoretical foundations and historical roots that can justify such an experiment in Korean libraries. To the end, a comparative analysis to Readers' Advisory Services was conducted, and also done for comparing the special features in Korean libraries with those of American libraries, especially as related to library services to readers. The final suggestion includes the tasks that Korean LIS scholars should undertake to make the ongoing bibliotherapy experiment become an indigenous Korean model for library services.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate propriety of remodeling and present improvement as a case study of a school library. For this, we analyzed investigation of the process of it by selecting a school library which has been completed recently and surveyed user satisfaction after remodeling. According to the survey result, is shows that the user satisfaction of information service and education activity that are library's function and role are efficiently increased by remodeling. In case of the school library, on the other hand, it shows that the users still need not only the improvement of the space structure and aesthetic environment of the exterior and interior but also the expansion of the stuff and facility.
Readers' advisory service has become more important for public libraries as one of the critical service areas in terms of supporting libraries patrons' reading. This study aims to discover major types of readers' advisory services provided through public libraries' web sites. Contents of 200 public libraries' home pages in U. S. were analyzed and nine areas were identified as the major readers' advisory areas. This study also proves that American public libraries are diversly communicating with their patrons and providing user-oriented advisory services. The identified key factors of readers' advisory services will help for Korean public libraries to develope their own services.
I studied in this paper on the comparative study between the constructivism and the structuralism as the educational methods. On the constructivism in educational methods they say that knowledge is constructed subjectively by person individually(cognitive constructivism) or by persons reciprocally in the society(social constructivism). On the structuralism in educational methods they say that knowledge(structure) is in the closed-end text objectively and person pursue and identify this objective knowledge in the closed-end text. But on the post-structuralism(neostructuralism) they say that the text is not closed-ended but open-ended. So constructivism is consistent with post-structuralism. Education include application of knowledge and awareness of knowledge on my opinion. Education on application of knowledge is more important in this knowledge based society. Constructivism connote the application of knowledge in the education. School library media center and media specialist(teather-librarian) are essential elements of this application of knowledge in the education.
This study aimed to analyze teacher librarians' perceptions of the importance and performance frequency of their roles inherent in the indicators and items for teacher evaluation and to determine their appropriateness. The results revealed that most indicators and items are appropriate for evaluating teacher librarians' job performance, but some items need to be revised to properly reflect teacher librarians' job tasks. Specific recommendations for their improvement were discussed.
The aim of this study is to investigate information literacy of immigrants in Korea and to suggest some ways to improve their information literacy. In conducting this study, a survey was given to 415 migrant workers and female marriage immigrants living in Busan and Gyeongsangnam-do area. The survey shows that the information literacy of immigrants in Korea is on basic level and the fields of information use, information production, information ethics and information and communication technology are on relatively low level. To reinforce the status of information literacy of immigrants, some effective ways need to be developed in information literacy education programs and Korean language programs.
This paper used the network analysis method to analyse a variety of attributes of searcher's search behaviors which was appeared on search access log data. The results of this research are as follows. First, the structure of network represented depending on the similarity of the query that user had inputed. Second, we can find out the particular searchers who occupied in the central position in the network. Third, it showed that some query were shared with ego-searcher and alter searchers. Fourth, the total number of searchers can be divided into some sub-groups through the clustering analysis. The study reveals a new recommendation algorithm of associated searchers and search query through the social network analysis, and it will be capable of utilization.
The aim of this study was to investigate the users' behaviour when interacting with elements based on XML documents retrieval system and develop approaches for XML retrieval which are effective in user-based environment. We followed the experimental guidelines from the INEX 2006 iTrack organizers. For the research goals, 16 responses from the questionnaires per subject and system logs were collected and analyzed using Excel and SPSS 17.0.
The domestic libraries offered users computer environment early to adapt in information age. However, the computer environment is generalized today, so it is needed to change about the role of electronic information room in this point. The author investigated use experience by 78 students who are student in library and information science. They experienced electronic information room and wrote their experience. As a result, they felt most inconvenience in information service of librarians, facilities and equipment and space. To improve the service of electronic information room, it is needed to develop the mission and service policy of electronic information room. And also the librarian must think the room as modern reference room that has digital and analog materials and information technology.
The purpose of this paper is to grow more interest and to forster research in full-texts retrieval of digitized books area through the review of Book Search Track and the analysis of research methods. First, this paper introduces the INEX tracks, the registration of INEX, the task process and the participating organizations. Second, to introduce the Book Search Track of all INEX tracks, this paper provides an overview of the test collection, the tasks, the task and submission guidelines and evaluation results of the Book Search Track's. Third, through paper review of the Book Search track that was lunched in 2007 as part of the INEX initiative, this paper presents the future research subject. This study expects that the readers are attracted by INEX tracks and full-texts retrieval of digitized books in korea.
The objective of this study is to work out a data-based educational and cultural program that can best identify the original role of library in a measure to activate it. To achieve this goal and introduce an educational and cultural program that would faithfully meet the desired characters of library, a research was made to examine the theoretical aspects of educational and cultural programs offered by public libraries, compare and analyze those conducted at the public libraries and life-long educational centers of the local autonomous bodies in Jeonbuk Province. Included in the research as subjects were 10 public libraries in the cities of the province including 5 branches of JeonJu Municipal Library and various educational and cultural programs operated directly by each municipal self-governing body under such title names as life-long educational centers, cultural houses, residential autonomy centers, women's halls, women's culture halls and women culture centers.
This study introduces strengths theory, a core subject of career development and job-getting, and discusses about the factors of strengths(namely talents, knowledge and skills), the processes of strengths personalization, and generating employability. It searches for opportunities to apply the concept of employability to the field of Library and Information Science now thrown under hard pressure from information and communication technology. Employability is defined here as competence to make oneself employable as needed by discovering or creating work opportunities using one's own tested personalized strengths. Employability is a package of systematically organized information about the essential abilities and productive personalities of a person, and it is essential to be duly cognitive of one's employability if one seriously intends to succeed in jobs and career. Since generation of employability heavily involves complex processes of information and knowledge-making, expertise from LIS, particularly from areas of personal information management(PIM) and personal knowledge management(PKM), is expected to help for process facilitation.
Despite much recent researches on career development or career movement, research on domestic librarians' career development are rarely conducted. Therefore this study examined the career movement of directors of public libraries as one aspect of research for librarian workforce. This study surveyed directors of public libraries and analyzed the following points; age of first job, initial type of career, age when they became the director, Factors affecting career move, career paths, working years by career steps, the number of changing department before director, training opportunities for manager, and so on. This study also analyzed what kinds of efforts they exerted to become a director. The result showed 45.1% of respondents made an effort to increase knowledge and skills, 23.6% undertook an effort to improve their honesty and gain their integrity, 12.8% underwent an effort to increase competence and self-management efforts in about the library. Through analyzing the career development process of public library directors, we can find the ideal path for career development to become a director of public libraries.
Library professionals should do their best themselves to develop libraries in the diversified society of 21st century. This study suggests library professionals' participation on library related committees and advocacy to develop libraries. If library professionals participating on library related committees bring understanding of other committee members to the importance of the role of libraries and librarians, this effort results the development of an individual library and the all libraries in Korea. This study examines how to develop libraries by the library professionals' participation on the committees of public and academic libraries and school committees and advocacy.
This study is to identify the concept of the digital curation, archiving and preservation resulted in the development of digital information resources, and is to suggest the roles and strategies of the digital curation in university library based on the lifecycle information process of the digital information resources and the examples of the digital curation from domestic and aborad. I have designed a curation model and the preservation of the digital resources in university library by using creators, curators, and users who stand on the basis of the lifecycle. As a result, I have built up a system that is to be a basis to share resources and cooperation among universities.
In this study, the actual condition in operating Information Disclosure System and University Information Disclosure was investigated and analyzed for 413 universities which had their own homepages out of the total 414 universities, which were the targets of university information disclosure in 2008. To activate Information Disclosure System of the academic library, how to use Korea Library Statistics Items and National Libraries Operation Assessment Index as the standard of information disclosure, and how to use a national library statistics system effectively were suggested. In addition, to make University Information Disclosure efficient, the amendments about the status of books holdings and library budget were respectively suggested so that the items and contents of disclosure about the status of library support might be disclosed by focusing on the security of finance and the improvement of the academic library. In order to enhance the interest of universities and in society and policy, it is necessary for the academic library to make use of Information Disclosure System and University Information Disclosure as a major means.
Since April last year when 「the disability discrimination act」 became effective in Korea, public libraries in Korea have been obligated to provide library service to the disabled. But most of public libraries in Korea do not and are not ready to service them. After finding out the characteristics of Korean disabled people and investigating current state of services for them in the public libraries of Korea by analyzing related statistics and laws, suggestions for the enhancement of public library service for disabled people in Korea were proposed.
This study intends to make a comprehensive inquiry into the meaning and limitations of Folksonomy, and to explore how to make full use of Folksonomy in library cataloging. To this end, this study examined as follows : (1)how the philosophical meaning of Folksonomy is different from traditional principles of library cataloging, (2)what the viewpoint of LIS scholars toward Folksonomy are, and how North American libraries have customized Folksonomy for their catalogs. In addition, (3)usefulness of Folksonomy in library catalogs is thoroughly discussed. Based on these, (4)the final discussion includes strategies for Korean LIS scholars and library practitioners to consider when applying Folksonomy to Korea library contexts.
This study is intended to present methods improving the classification system of KDC architecture engineering fields after comparing and analyzing the academic system of architecture engineering, classification system of KDC, DDC, and LCC, and that of the research field classification system of National Research Foundation of Korea. The results of the analysis have revealed that it is required to improve and correct the KDC 5th edition of architectural engineering including the addition of classification items that reflect the trend of academic development, proper development in the rank classification terms of architectural structure engineering, addition of detailed subjects, selection of proper classification terms, errors of classification symbols and English expression, and omission of correlative indexes in the classification items. This study has proposed improved methods to solve those problems.
Jwa-lee Wonjong Gongsin-Nokgwon(佐理原從功臣錄券) is a book which recorded the titles of position and the names of retainers who made Sung-jong into Chosun dynasty's king. This study aims to research into existing only 1 books of Jua-ik Wonjong Gongsin-Nokgwon, which were to analyze the reasons of grant, structure and forms, the characteristics of meritorious retainers' official positions and social status. As the result, Jwa-lee Wonjong Gongsin-Nokgwon is the metal typologic book which was made up Eul-hae(乙亥) letter type. The structure of the Jwa-lee Wonjong Gongsin-Nokgwon was composed of the beginning(卷首)․the body(本文)․the end(卷末). Jwa-lee Wonjong meritorious retainers formed the total of 1,059 persons(1st grade : 64 persons, 2nd grade : 272 persons, 3rd grade : 723 persons) with 513 official titles. Also an analysis of their family name confirmed that 1,059 persons were “Lee" which constituted the largest group(21%), “Kim" were second group(15%).
