Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore semantic characteristics of IFLA school library guidelines through network analysis. There are two versions, 2002 edition and 2015 revision of the guidelines. This study analyzed the 2002 edition and 2015 revision of the IFLA school library guidelines view point of semantic network, and compared characteristics of two versions. The keywords were to extracted from two texts, semantic network were composed based on co-occurrence relations with keywords. The centrality(degree centrality, closeness centrality, betweenness centrality) was analyzed from the network. In addition, this study conducted topic modeling analysis using LDA function of NetMiner4.0. The result of this study is following these. First, When comparing the centrality, the 'Program, Teaching, Reading, Inquiry, Literacy, Media' keyword was higher in the 2015 revision than in the 2002 edition. Second, 'Inquiry' in degree centrality and 'Achievement' in closeness centrality which were not included in the 2002 edition top-ranked keyword list, have new appeared in 2015 revision. third, As a result of the analysis of topic modeling, compared to the 2002 version, the importance of topics on programs and services, teaching and learning activities of librarian teacher, and media and information literacy is increasing in the 2015 revision.

Abstract

Following the rapid development and change of information technologies and sociocultural environments, public libraries are recently facing demand for various changes regarding their traditional functions and roles. They need to make efforts to understand accurately the changing factors of their surrounding environments and their resulting job changes so that they can make active responses to the changes of the times. The purposes of this study are to diagnose changing situations in the current surrounding environments and job content of public libraries and propose a basic direction for them to figure out and react to the causes of their core change content. For these purposes, the study 1) examined literature and previous studies on the surrounding environments and job factors of public libraries, 2) reviewed current job states and change cases in major criteria and standards, legislations, institutions, and policies about public libraries, and finally 3) identified the factors of their surrounding environments and job changes, tested their validity in the delphi method.

Abstract

In the third comprehensive library development plan, the formal and informal social safety space function of the library is used as a project. Therefore, this study investigated whether libraries were designated as evacuation facilities and related service status, and librarians' awareness, perception and attitude toward disaster and disaster response services. Based on this, it was intended to propose a direction to activate disaster and disaster response services. The research results are as follows. First, it is necessary to improve the perception of librarians who are the service providers. Second, discussions on spatial aspects, such as temporary or permanent, are needed. Third, development of disaster and disaster-related service models is required. Fourth, the administration's support and management are essential for the effectiveness of the library's function as a social safety space. Fifth, when developing guidelines for the role of libraries as social shelters and related services, specific details to address the concerns of individual libraries and librarians need to be specified.

Abstract

With social support for reading clubs expanding, the purpose of this study is to examine the operational status of reading clubs, to investigate how useful policy support is, and to discuss the challenges to be solved in order to vitalize the reading clubs in the future. To the end, this study intends (1) to investigate the composition of the reading club and the status of participation in the reading clubs, (2) to analyze the satisfaction of club activities from the perspective of club members, and identify the results and the meaning of support activities so far, and (3) to discuss strategies to vitalize reading clubs. The data for discussion were collected through a survey of reading club members supported by a local government, and the collected data was analyzed using frequency analysis.

Abstract

This study was started with the aim of grasping the current status of research data management of forestry engineering researchers. In order to achieve the research purpose, the survey was conducted using a tool called DAF (Data Asset Framework). DAF is an investigative tool that provides a means to identify, position, describe and evaluate how the agency manages research data. Using this DAF, the research data management status was analyzed for researchers in the field of forestry engineering at the National Institute of Forest Science. As a result of analysis, the current status and problems of the five categories such as the method and type of research data creation, sharing, storage, preservation, and reuse were identified, and solutions were presented in relation to the problems. This study is a basic investigation using a systematic tool such as DAF, and can be used as a reference for analyzing the current status and problems of research data when designing RDM system in a specific field.

Abstract

The study aims to prove the raison d'etre of public libraries in urban regeneration paradigm. Life SOC Plan is one of South Korea's urban regeneration policies. Public libraries are considered important in life SOC Plan because public libraries are "Social Anchors". Social Anchor is space-time-bounded place that accelerates diverse people's interactions. Social Anchor makes collective identity that supports production of social capital. Public libraries are institutions producing social capital but have weak collective identity because their missions(open, sharing, equality of information) don't allow boundaries and membership. The study conducted literature reviews and case studies to confirm how collective identity of public libraries strengthens. As a result, the study confirmed that renovating under-used space based on urban regeneration paradigm makes place identity of the under-used space to collective identity of public libraries. Thus, constructing public libraries by renovating under-used space is Social Anchor formation model based on urban regeneration paradigm.

Abstract

This study aims to identify factors to the sustainable reading attitude for making suggestion of the measures in reading education to strengthen the sustainable reading attitude. First of all, a set of in-depth interviews as a pilot was conducted with middle school students to search the factors, then a questionnaire was developed based on the pilot and existing research reports to survey middle school students in Seoul metropolitan area. The results from the analysis of the survey data showed that environmental factors in the schools, individual characteristics, such as grade and gender, interests, and perceptions of reading education significantly influenced the sustainable reading attitude, statistically. This study has implications to suggest the practical direction of desirable reading education to strengthen the sustainable reading attitude.

Abstract

It is expected that Gyeonggi-do Small Libraries will increase in quantity in the future due to the current SOC complex project being implemented by the government, and it is deemed that institutional and policy support must be provided with priority in order for the Small Libraries to grow qualitatively through the implementation of substantial measures. Based on the findings of this study, the reform measures proposed to revitalize Gyeonggi-do Small Libraries in terms of ordinances as follows: ① strengthen the library law and business promotion related to Small Libraries; ② enact the mandatory library law provisions for the installation of and support for Small Libraries; ③ even if there are relevant provisions in the 「Library Act」, the local governments' Small Libraries Support Ordinances should at least simply state that they must meet the criteria specified in the 「Library Act」; and ④ provisions on the number and qualifications of operating personnel of Small Libraries reflecting the number of users and the size of collections of books of Small Libraries of cities and counties.

Abstract

The research aims to investigate immigrants', librarians' and multicultural experts' information needs and perception on current multicultural services in Korean libraries, and to suggest the directions for providing multicultural library services. The research collected the data through conducting both in-depth interviews and focus group interviews with immigrants, librarians and multicultural experts. The research found the significant and emergent features on immigrants' and librarians' requests and perception about current library multicultural services. On the analysis of the findings, the research discussed the implications of the policies for library multicultural services and the alternatives to improve library multicultural services and librarians' multicultural competencies.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the current status of space use in university library and draw up considerations for enhancing space utilization based on the analysis results. For this purpose, the utilization rate of each space was analyzed by categorizing the user's space of the university library, and secondly, the preferences of the major user groups were analyzed according to the characteristics of the users' space. For empirical analysis, we collected and refined users' space usage data (98,282 people's data 433,769 cases) accumulated for one year for the central library of "J" National University. Then we analyzed the usage pattern according to space and period(monthly, hourly). In addition, preferences for each major group of users (undergraduates, graduate students and graduates) in the library were analyzed through the library visitors' data (2,426,553 cases) over the same period. The results of this study can be used as preliminary research for the composition and arrangement of users' space in future university libraries.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to provide an in-depth analysis on the publication patterns of the 1,029 journal articles by the Life Sciences' faculty at the K University, for the years 2004-2017 and to investigate any difference between their publication patterns and the citedness for the years 2004-2018. Among the three funding agency types, the research publications supported by foreign funding received the more citations than publications by other types of funding, and the study also found a statistical difference in the citedness (F = 10.467, p < .000***). In addition, the internationally co-authored publications received more citations than three other types of co-authored publications in terms of the immediacy index per publication and the average citations per publication.

Abstract

This study was conducted to grasp the changing user needs, especially the changing information needs of the vulnerable groups of knowledge and information. The study analyzed the information needs of the migrants in Area A by introducing a community-based participatory research methodology. The authors cooperated with the local community throughout the entire course of the study and proposed an inclusive library strategy for the underprivileged in the A region. Migrants were in demand for easy writing materials, reading activities programs, leisure culture programs, and literacy programs. In particular, it was analyzed that services should be provided through cooperation with related organizations. As a result of the study, it was suggested to provide experiences of deeply participating in the current library and to provide various information sources (resource guides) and to promote through children.

Abstract

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, scholars at institutions of higher education around the world are transitioning their teaching, service, and research into online settings; for many this may be a new and challenging experience. While many of the best practices associated with research in traditional or face-to-face settings also apply to research in or via online settings, there are some additional challenges and nuances that researchers must adequately address and plan for due to the affordances and limitations of online settings. This paper discusses the key issues of privacy, informed consent, trust and trustworthiness, and retention through the literature and provides practical recommendations based on evidence and experience from two different online research projects. The reflections on and examples from these two research projects contextualize the above issues and act as evidence to inform research as a practice. The authors hope this evidence and practical guidance may help researchers better prepare for research in a socially distanced world.

Abstract

Digital Library System(DLS) for the school library is a key access tool for school library materials. The purpose of this study was to find ways to improve the accessibility of materials through analysis of students' information search behavior in DLS. Data were collected through recording of 42 participants' DLS search process, and questionnaire. As a result, the search success rate and search satisfaction were found to be lower when the main purpose of DLS is simple leisure reading, information needs are relatively ambiguous, and when user experiences the complicated situations in the search process. The satisfaction level of search time sufficiency was the highest, and the search result satisfaction was the lowest. Besides, there was a need to improve DLS, such as integrated search of other library collection information, the recommendation of related materials, the print output of collection location, voice recognition through mobile apps, and automatic correction of search errors. Through this, the following can be suggested. First, DLS should complement the function of providing career information by reflecting the demand of education consumers. Second, improvements to DLS functionality to the general information retrieval system level must be made. Third, an infrastructure must be established for close cooperation between school library field personnel and DLS management authorities.
